A Prayer for Thanksgiving

O, heavenly Father:
We thank thee for food and remember the hungry.

Amen.

MOROCCO & LIBYA HUMANITARIAN RELIEF

Two natural disasters have recently struck the region of North Africa with a devastating earthquake in Morocco followed by severe flooding in Libya caused by Storm Daniel.

On Friday, September 8th, 2023, in the High Atlas Mountain region of Morocco, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake – the largest in the country since 1969 – caused extreme damage to buildings and property and has claimed the lives of at least 2,900 to date with another 5,500 people injured. Since the region is not traditionally prone to large seismic activity, buildings are not built to withstand such large tremors.

Two days later, on Sunday, September 10th, a Mediterranean hurricane-type event known as a “medicane” struck shore and quickly overwhelmed the port town of Derna in Libya. “Storm Daniel” delivered more than 400mm of rain within 24-hours and swept away families, took down buildings and bridges and completely overwhelmed dams which burst allowing rain waters to flood the streets of the town. Entire neighbourhoods were washed out to sea due to the storm that displaced over 30,000 people, with 10,000 more missing or unaccounted for. As of today, the flood has taken the lives of more than 11,000 people.

While rescue operations are ongoing in both countries, the process is very slow and there is a strong likelihood that the death toll will rise exponentially in the coming days and weeks.

For those interested in supporting humanitarian relief efforts to help those in need, please note the following:

By phone through the Red Cross – 1-800-418-1111

When you donate stocks, mutual funds and other publicly traded securities to a registered charity, you pay no capital gains tax and receive a tax receipt for the full amount of the gift. It means a great tax break for you and more significant support of your Parish and various archdiocesan charities such as ShareLife, St. Augustine’s Seminary, The Shepherds’ Trust and many others.

THE CANADIAN LIBRARY PROJECT

The Justice & Peace & the Integrity of Creation Committee

This past weekend, September 23-24 and up to the end of this weekend, our parish through the Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committee and in collaboration with the Canadian Library Project has had a micro gallery display in our Gathering Space. Hopefully this has assisted us in observing and commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day which is normally observed on September 30th each year.

The micro gallery display consists of books that have been “individually covered in Indigenous-inspired fabric, and arranged on bookshelves. The names of lives lost, printed in gold letters, are placed on the spines of these books to individually respect and honour the thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls and children.”

It is the hope of TLC and the JPIC at St. Gabriel’s that “the visual representation of the books covered in glorious Indigenous fabrics and the names of those lost, printed on the spines of the books, will evoke in us a sense of empathy, understanding & desire to see change.”

Coincidentally, the Archdiocese of Toronto holding a special collection this weekend to support the Indigenous Healing & Reconciliation Fund. “The fund will support both local and national programs proposed by Indigenous communities to nurture the ongoing reconciliation journey.”

THE 109th WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES

Sunday, September 24th

Cathedral of the Transfiguration
10350 Victoria Square Blvd, Markham

The theme announced by His Holiness Pope Francis for this year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees is “Free to Choose Whether to Migrate or to Stay.”. In his message, Pope Francis acknowledges that while the decision to migrate should always be free, in many cases it is not. This point was reflected by St. John Paul II in his message for the 90th World Day of Migrants & Refugees, in which he wrote, “building conditions of peace means in practice being seriously committed to safeguarding first of all the right not to emigrate, that is, the right to live in peace and dignity in one’s own country.” As he concluded his message, Pope Francis referenced the words of the Lord when He said “…I was a stranger, and you welcomed me” reminding us that the Lord’s words are a “constant admonition to see in the migrant not simply a brother or sister in difficulty, but Christ himself, who knocks at our door.”

This occasion will be marked with the celebration of Mass, which will take place on Sunday, September 24th, 2023, at 12:00 PM. at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, located at 10350 Victoria Square Blvd. in Markham. Monsignor Makarios Wehbi will preside, and Bishop John Boissonneau will be the homilist. A short program will follow. All are welcome

The Justice & Peace & the Integrity of Creation Committee

Starting on the weekend of September 23rd until October 1st, our parish through the JPIC Committee and in collaboration with the Canadian Library Project will put up a micro gallery display in our Gathering Space.

The micro gallery display will consist of books that which have been “individually covered in Indigenous-inspired fabric, and arranged on bookshelves. The names of lives lost, printed in gold letters, are placed on the spines of these books to individually respect and honour the thousands of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women, Girls and children.” It is the hope of TLC and the JPIC at St. Gabriel’s that “the visual representation of the books covered in glorious Indigenous fabrics and the names of those lost, printed on the spines of the books, will evoke a sense of empathy, understanding and desire to see change.”

The micro gallery display will be our parish way of observing and commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day

JPIC COMMITTEE SURVEY

The members of our committee would like to thank the many parishioners who participated in the Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) survey last June 2023. You have helped us identify the issues that are important to you and for the parish to be involved with. Homelessness and Food Insecurity were identified as major concerns, as well as issues regarding our Indigenous brothers and sisters.

While our parish is already actively involved with the issues of homelessness and food insecurity, our JPIC committee members will soon meet to discuss the possibility of providing additional support regarding those issues. We will also be looking at increasing our awareness about Indigenous issues. On this matter, we will include in next week’s bulletin information about the Canadian Library Project and the Orange Shirt Day in time for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which is observed each year on the 30th of September.

If you need any other information, please contact the co-chairs of JPIC Helen Pierre and/or Lily D’Gama or Sr. Malou at StGabrielJPIC@gmail.com.

CARING FOR THE HOMELESS IN OUR CITY

Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. They are very grateful.

Rosalie Hall, assists young parents and their children, offering prenatal supports including prenatal classes, nutrition and can help find a child care provider.

The food we donate from our parish often replenishes their empty food bank.

Good Shepherd provides more than 800 hot meals each day. As housing costs soar, they provide affordable housing and assisted living supports to help seniors and other homeless to find their way back to secure housing and for some, a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.

Your food donations are very important as numbers of people in need continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired
