Recently there was a series of articles in the Toronto Star on autism. In China children with autism are called ‘children of the stars,’ they shine bright and alone and are unreachable. There are many forms of autism but often parents and teachers don’t always know just what is getting through as they try to communicate with the ones they love and care for.

Homily – November 11

In today’s readings we have the story of two widows. The widow of Zarephath did not hesitate to share the little she had meant for her own survival and that of her son with this total stranger. At first Elijah just asked her for some water. Then he wanted some bread. But she had nothing but a handful of flour and a few drops of oil to prepare a final meal for herself and her son. Then they would wait for death. How desperate can one be? “Do not fear,” the prophet said. “Do as you were planning, but give me some as well. You will not run out.” The three of them were able to eat for a year: the prophet, the woman, the child. The flour did not vanish. The oil did not go dry.

Homily – November 4

All the great faiths of the world have a core code that expresses all the rest of its teachings. “Hear O Israel the Lord our God is one God and you shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” This prayer is known as the Shema and is the daily prayer of all devout Jews. In Hebraic thought, heart, soul, and strength do not mean separate human faculties but the person in the totality of his/her being. God demands radical and total obedience from the Israelites he delivered from the slavery of Egypt.
