A number of years ago I got a phone call from a woman who just wanted to sound off. She’d stopped going to Sunday Mass because she was sick and tired being surrounded by phonies. She went on and on about these women in their mink coats and their plastic surgeries. Then there were these people who drive up in the expensive cars but put nothing in the collection basket. After this long tirade she finally stopped talking.

Homily – August 26

For the past Sundays we’ve heard of Jesus feeding 5000 people with the five loaves and the two fish. Jesus reminds the people about the manna with which God fed their ancestors as they journeyed through the barren desert. Without this gift from God they would have died. Jesus claims to be a new manna. He is the living and life giving bread come down from heaven and whoever eats this bread will live forever. He startles the people by telling them that unless they eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood they cannot have life in them.

Different times in the gospel Jesus made amazing, challenging statements. I am the light of the world. I am the way the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me. I am the Good Shepherd and today we hear another ‘I am’ statement, I am the bread of life.

I suspect that over the past weeks most of us, at one time or another has spent some time watching the Olympics. The Olympians are dedicated men and women who spend years preparing for these Olympic contests. A big part of that preparedness is following strict diets. They have to watch what they eat. No junk food, no cakes or cookies. Must be terrible.

Arrival of the refugee family

The refugee family sponsored by our Parish finally arrived on July 25, 2012! We thank God for their safe arrival.

A picture taken of them (mother Najat, her three adult children and an eleven-year-old daughter of one of her children), their relatives and old neighbours from Damascus now living in Toronto, and some of our refugee committee members who welcomed them at the airport.
