Homily – There Was Not a Needy Person Among Them

April 15th, 2012

John ends his gospel with a compliment to each of us here today: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.” We have not seen, we have not touched and yet we still believe, in good times and in bad, the awesome truth that “Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.” As we said after the renewal of our baptismal vows during the Vigil, ‘This is our faith, this is the faith of the church we are proud to profess it in Christ Jesus our Lord.’

Green Sacred Space Award

April 11th, 2012

On March 25, St Gabriel’s was presented with the Green Sacred Space Award 2012 at the annual forum organized jointly by Greening Sacred Spaces and the Green Awakening Network. The forum was held this year at the Noor Cultural Center; its theme was “Green Choices for Faith Communities”, and the keynote speaker was Elizabeth May, the leader of the Green Party of Canada.

In her speech, May reminded the participants of the importance of making decisions based on sustainability. While Native Peoples are said to keep their seventh generation in mind when they make decisions as a society, we seldom even think of their impact on our children. She further asked if it is possible that while we say we worship God, in reality we may be adoring Mammon.

Homily – April 8

April 8th, 2012

This is a night of light and life. Our Easter Candle is the symbol of the risen Christ, the light of the world who through his passion, death and resurrection has conquered the darkness of sin and death and brought the light of truth to the world. Christ promised those who follow him would not walk in darkness and he challenged those who bear his name – you are the light of the world, so let your light shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. After your baptism or reception into the church you will receive a candle lit from our Easter candle and a very important prayer will be said “you have been enlightened by Christ, walk always as children of the light. Keep the flame of faith alive in your hearts and when the lord comes may you go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.”
