At the very beginning of his public life we hear the story of Jesus and Mary and the disciples being at a wedding feast. The hosts had the embarrassing misfortune of running out of wine. Mary notices this and tells Jesus they have no wine. Jesus changes ordinary water into choice wine to save his friends from embarrassment even though he tells his mother ‘my hour has not yet come.’ In Johns gospel we are told, “this was the first of the signs given by Jesus” There will be many more signs, many more miracles given by Jesus to the astonishment of the ordinary people and to the annoyance and the hostility of the authorities.

The images of light and darkness are a constant reality in our scriptures. Our creating God’s first words were “let there be light.” Paraphrasing the first chapter of John’s gospel we read; “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God” – the word was the true light that enlightens all people – a light that shines in the darkness, a light that darkness could not overpower. In other words, in the end light always conquers the dark.

This annual parish event is again being sponsored by the Pastoral team. Passover is the oldest festival of the Hebrew liturgical calendar. It has been observed by the Jewish people for more than 3,000 years. Passover is a religious family meal celebrating Jewish freedom from slavery. It occurs in the spring, the time of renewal in “Nissan”, the first month of the Hebrew year, and it lasts for eight days. Why do we celebrate this “meal” at St. Gabriel’s? First, this celebration helps us to understand our religious roots, which are Jewish. Second, it is an opportunity for us to celebrate our growth as a community and be together with families and friends at this most special time during Holy Week. Please call the Parish Office at 416-221-8866 by Friday, March 30th to book your table of 6 or 8, or to have your name added to a table.
In past years, Tuesday evenings and Wednesday mornings have been devoted to religious topics decided on by those who wish to participate.

To raise funds for the Marguerite Bourgeoys Family Centre, the Youth Group of St. Gabriel’s are selling hand-made chocolate Easter eggs for $3.00 each or 2 for $5.00 before and after all the Masses this weekend, March 17th/18th.
Your support will help the Centre promote and maintain their service in the Diocese.
A donor has challenged parishioners, schools, employee groups and corporate supporters to match up to $650,000 in new and increased contributions to the 2012 ShareLife Campaign. Should we realize the maximum potential of this effort, over one million new dollars would be raised for the work of our agencies. At a time when our social service agencies are reporting increased demands for their services, these new funds would help to introduce new programs and reduce waiting times for services for the marginalized in our communities.
Working wonders for people with special needs Sherrie has faced many challenges with her mental health and her developmental disability but she continues to challenge herself to live a full and healthy life. She maintains two jobs and swims in the Special Olympics, often winning in her specialty – backstroke. She actively participates with the ceramics program at the Seniors Centre at Mary Centre and has recently taken up line dancing. On Sundays, Sherrie is involved with the children’s program with her Church. She is always open to new possibilities and suggestions – a shining inspiration to anyone who crosses her path and a bright example of how we can all have fulfilling lives despite adversity and challenges. ShareLife-funded agencies in our region assisted more than 28,000 people with special needs last year, affirming their value to our society and making us all stronger as a result.
Next Sunday, March 25th , 2012 is ShareLife Sunday. Please give generously. You can work WONDERS!

Your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses next weekend for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre. More volunteers are encouraged to get a copy of a casserole recipe and a pan and give it a try. Three recipes are available here. Printed copies of the recipes are also available. The gospel for today can be a bit shocking. We see Jesus in a bit of a rage. He was disgusted with the way the religious authorities allowed the sacred space of the temple, the house of God, to be turned into market place for the selling of animals and the changing of money. Jesus takes it upon himself to clean up the temple and return it to what it is meant to be, a house of prayer and praise.
