R.C.I.A. AND ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Meetings in preparation for the R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin in October. These meetings are for persons interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. The exploration may lead the candidate to seek baptism, and become a member of the Catholic Christian community; or for Christians already baptized into another Christian denomination, the reception into the Catholic Church.

Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation but who wish to do so are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

As well, these meetings may be an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of our faith. Very often, especially for those of us who received our religious instruction at an early age, we tend to grow physically, mentally, psychologically etc., but the understanding of our faith does not grow correspondingly. The RCIA may serve as a good opportunity for us to ask questions and to develop a more adult understanding of our faith.

If you are interested in joining the RCIA meetings or if you would like to have more information about it, please contact Sr. Maria Lucia at 416-221-8866.

SHARELIFE

Let’s show we care on ShareLife Sunday

This weekend is the final ShareLife Sunday of the year. But ShareLife is more than a collection. It’s how we as a community say “we care.” In solidarity with Catholics throughout the Archdiocese, we provide a witness of God’s love by actively supporting those in need locally and the greater world.

Our goal this year is $198,000 To date we have achieved $97,874. If you have not done so, please give generously during the special collection or at sharelife.org. Thank you for supporting our parish’s ShareLife campaign.

ST. GABRIEL’S REFUGEE COMMITTEE – UKRAINIAN FAMILY SPONSORSHIP

We are pleased to report that our team of 21 volunteers is getting ready to welcome a family from the Ukraine.

We are in the very early stages of this sponsorship and as yet we do not know how or when we will be matched with a family in need. Our Sponsorship is the through the Office of Refugees Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT) and they have a team in Poland speaking to Ukrainian families about resettlement in Canada.

We will of course keep the Parish informed of developments as they happen. Thank you for your continued support of this important work.
Hebrews 13:2

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

FOOD FOR THE NEEDY IN OUR CITY

Each month the food we collect is sent to Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre.

Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential through the provision of a wide range of child development, community, residential and educational services.

Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.

GARDEN SHED

The Garden Ministry is pleased to welcome Dylan Ngan, who recently joined St. Gabriel’s staff as our Canada Summer Jobs Gardening Helper. Please greet him if you meet in the garden.

Treat yourself to a discovery of spring blossoms in the north and south gardens: purple lupin spears in the south and baptisia’s purple pea-like flowers in the north. Also in bloom in both gardens is comfrey with its droopy, pink, bell-like blossoms. And if you are fond of ferns, the best time to view the several fine displays in the south garden is now, before the summer heat.

Our first harvest was delivered to the Good Shepherd this week – radish and lettuce.

Contact us at sgpgardenministry@gmail.com.

FINANCE CORNER

Please pick up your Offertory envelopes at the PariSh Office if you have not already done so. Thank you.

One of the most financially sound ways to support the Archdiocese of Toronto is with the gift of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds). When you donate stocks, mutual funds and other securities to a registered charity, you pay no capital gains tax and receive a tax receipt for the full amount of the gift. It means a great tax break for you and support of various archdiocesan charities such as, your parish, ShareLife, St. Augustine’s Seminary, The Shepherds’ Trust, Office for Refugees and many others.

For further information, contact the development office at:
416-934-3400 ext. 561/519 or development@archtoronto.org.

GARDEN SHED

Springtime finds everything growing vigorously, especially the weeds. Indeed, sometimes, they seem like bullies, overtaking and crowding out the slower-growing ferns and flowers. But, even an hour a day of weeding can restrain the progress of, for instance garlic mustard, or even stop it in its tracks.

Let’s give the little guys a helping hand: join our merry band of weeders! Email us at sgpgardenministry@gmail.com.

Laudato Si’ Week 2022, to be held May 22nd to May 29th, will mark the seventh anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on creation care. GARDEN SHED

Congratulations to the hardworking confirmands Alice Leung, Cassandra Victorine, Édouard Taylor, Jay Wang, Mark Viado, Richard Antigua and Ryan Jung! In devoting service hours to the care of the garden, they have improved both its health and appearance.

On Saturday, May 14th, the members of the Garden Ministry built two new planting boxes, which greatly increases our capacity to grow food for the Good Shepherd Ministries. We also planted carrots, cucumber, squash, tomatoes, radish, green onions, parsley, and beans, and set up our rainwater harvesting system.

Plant growth at this time of year is staggering and that includes weeds. Help us keep them under control: one hour a day can make a difference. Join the Garden Ministry! Email us at sgpgardenministry@gmail.com

We believe that the public is eager for substantive, respectful dialogue on political issues, which we will provide with these resources. And we will try to serve the faithful from across the province who are engaged and active citizens.

OPENING: SUMMER GARDENING POSITION FOR YOUTH

For the third year, St. Gabriel’s has received a Canada Summer Jobs grant from the federal government for a Gardening Helper, between the ages of 15 to 30, to assist with gardening tasks 30 hours per week for 9 weeks, beginning late May. Work can include, but not be limited to watering, weeding, planting, transplanting, soil preparation, pruning, harvesting, mulching, cleaning up debris and care of garden tools. For more information, email sgpgardenministry@gmail.com. To apply, please send your resume to stgabrielsparish@bellnet.ca.

In the space of a couple of weeks, the garden has turned from winter beige to lush green and buds are beginning to open on the fruit trees: blossoms of delicate pink on the cherry trees, neon pink on the peach, white on the apple, yellow on the haskap and more. Why not make an after-mass stroll through the garden a habit so you can watch the buds open and the blossoms turn to fruit?
