A Box of Remembrance has been placed on the altar for the month of November. You are invited to write the names of your deceased relatives and friends on a sheet of paper at home and bring it to place in the box.
Those whose names are in the Box of Remembrance will be remembered at all the Masses celebrated in November.
“As Christians, let us always make charity, faith and hope the basis of our lives and our actions.” – Pope Francis, Message for the sixth World Day of the Poor (Nov 13th, 2022)
Last Sunday, our youth group assembled 100 winter care packages of gloves, socks, and gift cards for the less fortunate. Our group of 25 spent the afternoon handing out packages to individuals in the downtown core and also dropped off packages to three shelters. It was a gratifying experience for World Day of the Poor. Thank you to our adult supervisors and to our pastoral team for their continued support!
Our youth group is always welcoming new members grades 6 and up. To get involved, please email sgpyouthgroup@gmail.com

Available weekend of November 26/27, 2022
A beautiful and unique calendar from the Canadian North will be available again! The calendar showcases photos of lovely landscape of the North captured by Bishop Jon Hansen on his many missionary trips in the Diocese of Mackenzie in the Northwest Territories. That Diocese is home to many isolated indigenous communities.
Many of you may have known Fatima Lee, who is formerly a member of our pastoral team at St Gabriel’s. She has served as a missionary in the Diocese of Mackenzie since 2018.
On the weekend of Nov 26/27, volunteers will be selling these beautiful 2022 calendars at the parish gathering space before and after mass, while the calendars last.
It is hoped that through the sale of these calendars, funds will be raised to support the travel of priests and pastoral workers of the diocese to the remote communities. Since this Diocese of 1.5 million sq. km has only nine priests serving, many of the isolated communities will have Mass only occasionally. Except in the deep of winter when the ice roads are available, each time a priest or pastoral worker visits, flying in and out of these communities is the only option. And it is notoriously expensive to fly in the north.
Please consider supporting the Diocese of Mackenzie. The calendars, at $20 each, are great for personal use; they will also make wonderful and unique gifts.
Saturday, November 19th to Sunday, December 11th
St. Vincent de Paul
During Advent, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, St. Gabriel Conference, will have a Giving Tree in the Gathering Space. The tree will be decorated with gift stars.
We invite you to take a star, buy a Walmart or Canadian Tire gift card for about $50 and bring it with the star attached to the Parish Office.
Rosalie Hall
At this time of the year, we are also thinking of the young mothers and babies of Rosalie Hall. If you wish to help, you may choose a “Christmas Stocking” from the tree to purchase pyjamas or undershirts for little ones, age 6 months to 5 years.
Sweaters or hoodies would also be very welcome. Unwrapped Items with the original stocking tag attached can be left in the box provided near the giving tree no later than Sunday, December 11th. Toys or books for these little ones would also be appreciated.
For the Moms, we are suggesting gift cards from Tim Horton’s, Walmart or MacDonald’s. These can be placed in the cards provided and brought to the Office. Thank you for your continued generosity.
There will be a second collection on November 26/27 to support the Ukrainian Sponsorship Initiative.

The Refugee Committee is actively looking for a 2 bedroom apartment that can be rented to host a Ukrainian family for 3-6 months.
If you have such a space, or know of someone who does, would you please contact the parish office at stgabrielsparish@bellnet.ca.

As you may know, the Archdiocese has asked us as either individuals or as a parish, to host Ukrainian families fleeing the war in the Ukraine. The numbers are stunning. Canada has received 676,000 applications; 378,000 applications have been approved and 115,000 Ukrainians have arrived. (Nov 15) The challenge now is accommodation.
Our parish refugee committee is committed to hosting a Ukrainian family but the challenge we have run into is the cost of rental accommodation in the Toronto area. The committee currently has funds to house a family for only three months. This does not provide much stability for newcomers while they get settled, learn English and find employment. We would like to provide a longer time frame for accommodation and support for the newcomers we will sponsor to provide more stability and support. To that end, we have been looking for private rental accommodation and are also looking to team up with other parishes who might like to support our efforts. We are also asking for your assistance by asking you to contribute to a second collection the weekend of Nov 26 & 27. Hopefully we can, together, live the gospel of Mathew.

You can be a hero for those in need!
Your year-end gift will double in value! From now until the end of 2022, your contribution to our parish’s ShareLife campaign will be matched by an anonymous donor up to a total of $1 million. When you give to ShareLife, you support agencies like Mary Centre. Here’s how your contribution makes a difference for the work of this agency:
“Thank you to all who donate to ShareLife. With each donation we receive, we are able to attain our goals of assisting people in their efforts in building a good life, and also providing a safe place for people with a developmental disability to stay so that their families/caregivers and themselves can get some needed respite.”
Our goal this year is $198,000. To date we have achieved $160,402 Please give at the parish using a ShareLife envelope, online through our parish website, or at sharelife.org/donate.
Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. They are very appreciative.
Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential. The food we donate from our parish often replenishes their empty food bank.
Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.
Your food donations are so important as numbers of people in need continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired.

A VIRTUAL EVENT RECOMMENDED BY THE OFFICE FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN UNITY AND RELIGIOUS RELATIONS WITH JUDAISM
In this lecture, Dr. David Arnow, a writer, clinical psychologist, and activist in the Jewish community will delve into the depths of the reservoir of hope from Biblical times to the present day. Grounded in Scripture and contemporary theology, Dr. Arnow will explore the fundamental sources of hope which have helped the Jewish people stay strong and optimistic through the challenges of life. These sources include: Teshuvah (a method to fulfill hope), Tikkun olam (the hope that we can repair the world by working together), Abraham and Sarah (models persisting in hope amid trials), Exodus (an archetype of redemptive hope), Covenant (the hope for a durable relationship with God), Job (the “hard-fought hope” that brings a grief-stricken man back to life), the World-to-Come (the sustaining hope that death is not the end), as well as Humour. Plan to attend this fascinating presentation drawing from our common heritage of a virtue that is very much in need today.

On that day, St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica, among other important buildings, such as the largest Shrine dedicated to St. Joseph in Canada, Montreal, QC., will be lit in red to symbolize the martyr’s blood. Please remember there are many other ways to contribute to this day, such as wearing red and inviting others to do the same. A donation of securities is one of the easiest and smartest ways to donate in Canada. When you donate to the Archdiocese of Toronto, you put stock in knowing that you are creating the greatest impact on the church and those we serve. Consider making a gift of securities to your parish or any one of our Archdiocesan charities.
With a gift of securities, you can receive an immediate donation receipt for the fair market value of the security. In addition, there is no capital gains tax applied to any benefit received from the sale of these securities. Listed securities include, stocks, bonds and mutual funds.
To donate listed securities, you can obtain our form, the Letter of Direction by visiting this link: https://www.archtoronto.org/en/offices-and-ministries/social-justice–outreach/development-and-sharelife/home/gifts-of-securities/.

NEW: Your year-end gift will double in value!
From now until the end of 2022, your contribution to our parish’s ShareLife campaign will be matched by an anonymous donor up to a total of $1 million. “Vulnerable members of our community are relying on you and me to ensure ongoing access to the care they so desperately need. This is why it’s crucial we meet our parish campaign goal of $13.8 million. Our goal can be met, but only if we each do our part.” – Cardinal Thomas Collins Our goal this year is $198,000. To date we have achieved $157,900]. Please give at the parish using a ShareLife envelope, online through our parish website, or at sharelife.org/donate.
Devastating floods in Pakistan have displaced hundreds of thousands, at one point leaving a third of the country inundated with water. More than 1,500 people have died following record rainfall with 33 million throughout the country affected by this disaster.
Since June, Pakistan has experienced three times more rainfall than an average monsoon season. Flooding and landslides have destroyed homes, crops, health centres, roads and bridges.
There is an elevated risk of the spread of malaria, dengue fever and other diseases. Priorities include clean water, shelter and health care for those directly affected by this tragic situation.
The Archdiocese of Toronto will channel donations through Catholic partners (including Caritas Canada – Development and Peace as well as the Archdiocese of Karachi) to support relief efforts underway. Please note that these organizations are not subject to the government matching funds program.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
As you know, each week we collect food for Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre.
Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential through the provision of a wide range of child development, community, residential and educational services.
Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 32 casseroles for October. For November, your prepared frozen casseroles will be collected at all the Masses on the weekend of November 26th/ / 27th to be delivered to the Good Shepherd Centre.
You may pick up a copy of a casserole recipes and a pan from the Parish Office. Three recipes are also available on St. Gabriel’s web site. Please remember to mark the label on the pan lid with the name of the casserole.
More volunteers are urgently needed to help feed the hungry in our city. For more information, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416 221-2791.

There will be a second collection next weekend for The Shepherds’ Trust. The mission of The Shepherds’ Trust is to help ensure that elderly and disabled priests are provided with sufficient financial resources to lead a dignified life after many years of ministry. Are you able to host a Ukrainian Family?
When hearing reports of the war in Ukraine, and the millions of Ukrainians that have been forced to flee their homeland, many have asked what they can do to help. Over 80,000 Ukrainians have already arrived to Canada through a special visa program created by Immigration Canada. An additional 500,000 have applied to the program and are expected to arrive in the coming months.
Many are arriving to Toronto and are without family here in Canada to help them. Among those will be some who are vulnerable to human trafficking, particularly seniors, single women, and women with children. There is an immediate need for families to host for a period of between one and six months some of those who have arrived.
If you would like to learn more about hosting a Ukrainian family, please go to Archdiocese of Toronto – Ukrainian Crisis (archtoronto.org) and register for a virtual information session.
