Beacons of Hope is a parish group formed nearly a year ago to support marginalized women both within St. Gabriel’s Parish and beyond. To date we are happy to have the opportunity to support two women’s shelters by providing personal care items, towels and winter coats.
First, we partnered with St. Joseph’s Morrow Park high school to provide pyjamas, robes, slippers and personal care items for one of the shelters downtown that serves senior women who were previously homeless in Toronto. For their Lenten Drive, the students and staff, led by their Liturgical Ministry, gathered two large carloads of items for these women.
In the past few weeks, our group provided “treats” and flowers for the women at a nearby shelter, for Mother’s Day.
All of these women came to live in these shelters due to unforeseen circumstances, and are among the marginalized of society. In the spirit of the Passionist charism, the late Pope Francis, as well as the newly elected Pope Leo, we will continue to serve these women extending to them hope, love and the light of Christ.
We look forward to continuing the work we started and will keep you posted.
Serving at the Lord’s table is a great honour and responsibility. The Altar Server Ministry Team would like to invite children who are 10 years or older (boys and girls), who are interested in committing and dedicating time and effort to serve Mass. Any adults who think they may desire to serve are encouraged to volunteer as well. All that is required is a desire to serve at the Altar of Our Lord. If you are interested, contact the parish office or email: altarserversstgabe@gmail.com

The Ascension of Our Lord, June 1st, 2025 Psalm 47
Today Luke writes for us two accounts of the Ascension of Jesus: in Acts and in the Gospel. Between these two, we sing Psalm 47 which invites us to shouts of joy, to the blast of a trumpet, to the singing of Psalms. If you’ve ever been close to a trumpet horn for a trumpet blast, you are in a position to appreciate this image more fully!
The words of this psalm, “God has gone up” are seen to describe the Ascension.
Some of us find this psalm’s royal image of God a problem.
However, this King is totally benevolent, never tyrant, always supportive lover. God never makes a mistake in knowing what is best for us humans and for all creation. This King is all compassion, bearing all of our sorrows and sharing all of our grief.
“For the Lord, the Most High, is awesome. a great king over all the earth.”
Watch for more information about a Garden Retreat for Seniors hosted by the Garden Team and the Ministry for Maturing Adults.
The Lord said, “you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.” Pray for an increase in vocations to the ordained and consecrated life. If God is calling you to be a priest, religious or deacon, contact Fr. Matt McCarthy, Director of Vocations, Archdiocese of Toronto at 416-968-0997 or go to www.vocationstoronto.ca

6th Sunday of Easter, May 25th, 2025 Psalm 67
We praise God because God blesses all of creation. God creates all and calls it good, God creates all as good, desires that good, and always provides. God blesses eternally.
Psalm 67 reminds us of this goodness of God and urges all peoples to praise God. Such thoughts permeate all three of our readings today: Acts, Revelation, and the Gospel as written for us by John.
“May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth revere him.”
Your love can help others thrive
Mental health challenges can impact anyone, whether you’re personally navigating them or supporting someone who is. These struggles transcend age and circumstance. Brenda was weighed down by shame, having battled anxiety and depression for decades. Through your support, she found a new perspective at a Catholic Family Services agency funded by ShareLife, where counselling lifted her up and allowed her to see her own worth. Your compassion is instrumental in helping others see themselves as God sees them: loving, important, and enough. Thank you for living the Gospel by helping relieve the pain of those facing silent battles.

We go from day to day without standing still and reflecting on our life journey with God, how God has been there all the way along, even in times when we felt dry or abandoned in our spiritual life. The retreat will be facilitated by Fr. Henk van Meijel, SJ.
The suggested offering is $65 per person which includes lunch, coffee/tea break and talks.

Psalm 145 is thought to have once been the final psalm of the Psalter. It certainly calls up constant praise of God: praise and thanks for graciousness and mercy, glory and power, the eternity of splendour.
“I will bless your name forever, my King and my God!”

The Pope’s Pastoral Works collection was established by the bishops of Canada in 1970. The Papal Charities allow the Pope to contribute to various charitable causes around the world, particularly toward aiding the victims of war, famine and natural disasters. By contributing to the Pope’s Pastoral Works, the faithful of Canada give a universal dimension to their charity.

Your helping hand ensures that no one struggles alone
No one is turned away from ShareLife-funded agencies due to inability to pay. You make it possible for individuals, couples, and families to access mental health services. Like Aimee, who grew up believing that life’s challenges were meant to be faced alone. She searched for the strength to speak with a counsellor, but felt hopeless, imagining that her struggles would be dismissed. Financial concerns weighed heavily on her, making it even harder to reach out. Imagine the relief Aimee felt when she learned about the sliding scale payment system at Catholic Community Services of York Region (CCSYR). Because of you, Aimee received immediate care, free of judgement.

Sow the seeds of hope for the next generation
The future of the Church depends on men and women heroically answering God’s call. When you support ShareLife, you enable the discernment, formation and education of those who will serve in our parishes through the Office of Vocations and seminaries. Your kindness makes it possible for future priests to attend St. Augustine’s Seminary and the Redemptoris Mater Missionary Seminary where they learn to tend to the Lord’s vineyard and work for the salvation of souls. In addition, St. Augustine’s Seminary educates permanent deacons and lay people serving our parishes. Thank you for your prayers and commitment towards young people on their journeys of faith.

Living the Gospel by providing for those in need
On the second ShareLife Sunday, we call upon your compassionate hearts to support your vulnerable brothers and sisters in need. More people than ever are turning to our agencies for help. The kindheartedness of ShareLife supporters like you enables access to essential programs and services, such as the treatment program and transitional housing at St. Michael’s Homes. For Jack, your support was transformative. After moving to start a physically demanding job, he suffered a knee injury which ultimately left him unemployed and addicted to pain medication. Thanks to your empathy, Jack had a safe space to overcome his addiction and gained the power to build himself back up.
Please give at the parish using a ShareLife envelope, online through our parish website, or at sharelife.org/donate.

During Catholic Education Week (May 4 – 9, 2025), we give thanks for the gift of publicly funded Catholic Education in our province. Catholic schools foster supportive communities where children can experience the joy of God’s love and understand the Christian mission in the world.
As we celebrate this Year of Jubilee, as pilgrims of hope, let us journey with our parishes, educators and families to sow and nurture the seeds of faith with the next generation of Catholics, encouraging them to live lives of holiness and Christian witness as one body in Christ.

Can you think of why the Gospel of John this Sunday mentions the apostles catching 153 fish?
No one really knows for sure, but some scholars speculate this could symbolize the diverse people the church is to serve.
