HOLOCAUST EDUCATION WEEK

Thursday, November 3rd at 7:30 PM
St. Gabriel’s Parish

For many years, St. Gabriel’s Parish has participated in Holocaust Education Week. On Thursday, November 3rd
at 7:30 PM we will present The Nazi Genocide of European Roma and Sinti and Its Historical Roots featuring Guest Speaker Dr. Gerhard Baumgartner, historian, journalist and lecturer at the Joanneum University in Graz, Austria.

The lecture will cover the main stages of the persecution of the Roma and Sinti and the circumstances which lead to their final deportation and murder in Nazi death camps in Poland. The presentation aims at integrating the history of this genocide within the wider frame of the Jewish Holocaust, pointing out similarities and crucial differences. New historical images, mostly unearthed during the last decade by German and Austrian researchers, will be used to illustrate this tragic history. This program is supported by the Roma Community Centre.

ROMAN MISSAL – THE NEW TRANSLATION

“And With Your Spirit”

One of the first things we will notice with the new translation is that, when the Priest says”The Lord be with you”, we now say “And with your spirit” instead of “And also with you.” The new response is much closer to the original Latin. When the Mass was first translated into English we were one of only two languages that did not translate it as “your spirit.” It is a very biblical response: Paul concludes four of his letters with a very similar expression. For example, at the end of his Second Letter to Timothy, Paul ends by saying, “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you.”
If you think about it, for nearly 2000 years Christians have been greeting each other. “The Lord be with you,” “and with your spirit.” So the new translation will bring unity to this response in all languages of the world – and with all previous Christian generations.

A LETTER FROM SHARELIFE

We thank the parishioners of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Parish for responding to the needs of the people of Somalia and other countries affected in the area known as the Horn of Africa. The worst drought to impact the area in 60 years has put an estimated 10 million people at risk of severe food shortages and famine. Somalia has been the hardest hit by this drought, which is also affecting Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya. Your total parish contribution of $4887.20 extends a helping hand to the suffering people in the area.

Donations received before September 16, 2011, have been matched by the federal government in its East Africa Drought Relief Fund, which will support relief projects in the region based on submissions from humanitarian organizations. ShareLife ensures contributions to its humanitarian relief programs are used responsibly and effectively. No administrative fees are applied to your contribution ensuring 100% of donations get to the agency involved.

On behalf of those who will be helped by this gift, thank you once again for your prompt response to the call for assistance. Your gift is a much needed boost to the people in the Horn of Africa as they face the effects of famine and drought. Please keep them in your prayers during this difficult time.

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

Next Sunday is World Mission Sunday here at St. Gabriel’s Parish. It is a global sign of the Universal Church and mission. Your prayers and donations will support churches, hospitals, schools and vocations in countries where the Church is beginning, where it is new. World Mission Sunday is our chance to assist Catholic Communities throughout the world to become self sufficient and to flourish. By sharing the gift of faith we can bring hope and love to those who need it most.
