A MESSAGE FROM THOMAS CARDINAL COLLINS ON POPE BENEDICT’S RETIREMENT

“Since his election in 2005, Pope Benedict has led the universal church with wisdom and holiness, offering to all the clear and loving message of the Gospel, and offering to each of us as well the personal example of a devoted disciple of Jesus exercising the mission of the Apostle Peter as a true servant of the servants of God. This is a time in which we all give thanks to God for the apostolic ministry of Pope Benedict. During this time of transition, we pray for his health and well-being as he enters a time of prayerful retirement. We also offer our prayers, in a special way, for the Cardinals of the world, who will gather in Rome in the coming weeks to choose the next successor to St. Peter.”

SHARELIFE

Together we are continuing to work wonders…

“Our Pope has described charity as “the true force that changes the world.” This statement is definitely true when we talk about ShareLife, the primary charitable appeal of our Archdiocese. Through our active involvement in ShareLife, we reach out to some of the most vulnerable, marginalized and needy people in our midst. We also help our neighbours, friends and fellow parishioners as they work through difficult times. In our region, we have the chance to exercise Catholic charity in a true meaningful way. Please consider supporting ShareLife, the annual fundraising appeal of our Archdiocese, during this Lenten season.”

—Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto

First ShareLife Sunday – March 17, 2013
Together, we can work wonders!

CANADIAN TIRE MONEY – MATERCARE

We will be collecting Canadian Tire money during the month of February in support of Matercare International which is an association of Catholic Obstetricians and Gynecologists working in developing countries. This organization is dedicated to improving the lives and health of mothers and their children, both unborn and born, through initiatives of service, training, research and advocacy. Please support this worthwhile campaign by dropping your Canadian Tire money in the collection basket.

CASSEROLES FOR THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

More volunteers are encouraged to get a copy of a casserole recipe and a pan and give it a try. Three recipes are available on St. Gabriel’s web site. CONVERSATIONS ON NATIVE ISSUES:

LAWS AND TREATIES
How they may impact the lives of Canada’s First Nations people today
Saturday, March 9th, 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM,
Gabriel Room

Recently there has been a growing clamor from First Nations people — among them the Idle No More Movement, the hunger strike of Chief Theresa Spence, and the meeting of some Aboriginal leaders with our Prime Minister. There seem to be grievances which are crying out to be addressed.

As Christians we are committed to follow the example of Jesus, to love our neighbours — especially those who are poor and marginalized. We continually hear in the media the plight of First Nations people. We must have often wondered how they ended up in their present situation. As it turns out, laws and treaties of our country may play a significant role.

On Saturday, March 9th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, our parish will be holding a workshop entitled Conversations on Native Issues. This workshop will focus on laws and treaties that affect the everyday lives of Canada’s native peoples. The speaker will be Senwung Luk, a young lawyer who grew up at St. Gabriel’s. Senwung is an Associate at Olthuis, Kleer and Townshend – LLP. His practice focuses on Aboriginal title litigation and treaty claims.

The workshop aims mainly at information – for participants to become better acquainted with the possible root causes of the situation of Canada’s First Nations people. A light lunch will be provided. To register, please call (416) 221-8866, or email fatimalee@bellnet.ca Admission is free. However, donations will be gratefully accepted to help defray the cost of the event.
