UPDATE ON OUR IRAQI FAMILY

As some of you may recall, our Iraqi refugee family left Damascus amidst heavy fighting last July, and arrived safely in Toronto.

Through your amazing generosity and support, and the hard work of our refugee committee, they have settled in extremely well. The youngest of the family, Reta, will be completing Grade 6. She loves school. The progress in her spoken English is truly impressive. Kharam and Athear, her two uncles and her mother have been working very hard on their English as well. They are still attending ESL classes, with Athear reaching already Level 4 in proficiency. The family keeps telling us how grateful they are for the opportunity to come to Canada and for your support, and what a difference that has made to their lives.

The time is coming, however, when our financial commitment to the family will end. Once again we are asking for your help. It is very important that Athear and Kharam find jobs so they can be responsible for their family’s support. Both men have worked in construction, and as stone masons; they have also done ceramic tiling. The men are eager to work; they are ready to consider working in any job available. If you are hiring or know of a friend who is, could you please contact Fatima Lee at the parish — (416) 221-8866 or email at fatimalee@bellnet.ca.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Celebrating Excellence in Catholic Education
May 5th to May 10th, 2013

We invite all parishioners to join in celebrating Catholic Education Week 2013, which runs from May 5th to May 10th. For more than 160 years, Ontario’s publicly funded Catholic schools have been integrating our faith into all aspects of school life, empowering one another to serve as faithful disciples. We celebrate the distinctive contribution that Catholic schools make, giving thanks and offering our prayers for all those who diligently nurture this precious gift. For more information about Catholic Education Week or to find your local school board, visit goodnewsforall.ca or the Archdiocese of Toronto online at: www.archtoronto.org.

For May, your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of May 26th/27th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre. There are now 3 different recipes available in the Parish Office or online at the Church website. More volunteers are encouraged to become active in helping to feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Please contact Irene Albrecht at 416 221-2791 if you require more information or would like to get copies of the recipes and a casserole pan.

SHARELIFE

Working wonders for our faith…

Men from all walks of life have decided to respond to God’s call to dedicate their lives to His service and the salvation of souls. They come from different backgrounds, skill sets, ethnic communities, ages and economic situations. At ShareLife-funded agencies such as Serra House, Redemptoris Mater, and St. Augustine’s Seminary, they undergo extensive theological education and practical field training.
