PASSIONIST JUBILEE SYNOD IN TORONTO

Phase One- Gratitude
www.stgabrielsynod.blogspot

Last December, Fr. Jim O’Shea, the Passionist Provincial, visited St. Gabriel’s to speak about the Passionist Jubilee Synod in Toronto. The goal of this synod is to listen to the voices of the marginalized in our parish community and to propose a vision for the work of the Passionists in Canada. This synod is a time our community to gather to explore serious issues, to listen to and learn from one another, to imagine how to address the issue in order to move into a better future, and to report these findings – all with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The synod process has now begun with Phase One, which is focused on the theme of gratitude. This phase will be facilitated virtually through an online blog, where participants are welcome to share their gratitude for St. Gabriel’s Parish and the Passionists’ missions in Canada. The blog is now open to all parishioners.

Please visit the parish website for more information, or you can visit www.stgabrielsynod.blogspot to access the blog directly. On the blog website, please see “Using the Blog” for instructions on posting on the blog and commenting on posts.

UKRAINIAN HUMANITARIAN RELIEF

Ukraine has been plunged into war after the Russian military invaded the country last week, resulting in widespread violence and a looming humanitarian crisis. In response to the request of parishioners, the Archdiocese of Toronto has launched a humanitarian relief effort to help the Ukrainian people at this time.

Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians have already fled their homes and are trying to find shelter in neighbouring countries. The United Nations estimates that there could eventually be up to five million Ukrainian refugees, depending on how the war transpires.

Pope Francis has called on the faithful to make Ash Wednesday (March 2, 2022) a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Ukraine. On that day – and the days that follow – a donation to help Ukrainians who are suffering due to this war would be a most appreciated gift.

The Archdiocese of Toronto will channel donations to support the Office for Refugees, Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA). ORAT is Canada’s largest private Sponsorship Agreement Holder, which helps bring hundreds of newcomers to our country each year; it will use donations to bring Ukrainian refugees to Canada as soon as possible.

Your donation will help Ukrainians who are beset by violence in Eastern Europe and it will help some of them find a new home in Canada.

Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website: www.archtoronto.org
By phone through the Development Office – 416-934-3411
Through the parish, making cheques payable to:
St.Gabriel’s Parish – Ukrainian Relief – Humanitarian Relief

Please continue to pray for the Ukrainian people and all those who suffer under the human tragedy of war. Thank you for your continued assistance.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

Thank you so much to the volunteers who prepared 52 casseroles for February. For March, your frozen prepared casseroles will be collected at all the Masses on the weekend of March 26th/27th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

More volunteers are encouraged to become active in helping to feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Church website. You may pick up casserole pans at the Parish Office. If you require more information, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416-221-2791.

FOOD FOR ROSALIE HALL & GOOD SHEPHERD

MAINTENANCE AND LONG-TERM REPAIRS

Special Collection, This Weekend, March 5th/ 6th

The Church building is approaching her 16th year of operation. Most equipment and machinery that keep the building functional are often not visible. This equipment has undergone regular checks and maintenance to ensure that they function properly and efficiently. Some of these have reached a critical milestone that would require major repairs or even a replacement. These items are classified as the “must haves” in our long-term budget.

One of the two project that we plan to undertake in 2022 is a major repair on the living wall. The living wall has not been in the best shape. We have solved the engineering issues that reside behind the wall. Our next step is to reconstruct the external visible living wall to one that we are usually proud to associate with St. Gabriel’s Parish.

The second under consideration is asphalt resurfacing of the south parking lot. The condition is deteriorating and may pose problems in the near future if it is not repaired.

We cannot achieve these milestones without your continued support and contribution to the maintenance funds. A special collection is being held this weekend, March 5th/6th. Please be as generous as your means allow.
