NEW ARCHBISHOP APPOINTED FOR TORONTO

Installation on Saturday March 25th at 10:00 AM

Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Francis (Frank) Leo, currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montreal, as the 14th Archbishop of Toronto.

The archbishop-designate succeeds Cardinal Thomas Collins, who has served the archdiocese since 2007. The new archbishop will be installed on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, Saturday March 25th at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica.

During this time of transition in the archdiocese, we give thanks for Cardinal Collins and his service to the Church and welcome Archbishop-designate Leo, who will be joining the community very soon. Please continue to keep these shepherds close in prayer in the days ahead.

CANADIAN BISHOPS RELEASE PASTORAL LETTERS TO ADVANCE THE HEALING JOURNEY WITH INDIGENOUS PEOPLES OF THIS LAND

On February 8th, 2023, the Bishops of Canada released a series of pastoral letters to advance the journey of healing, reconciliation and hope with Indigenous Peoples of this land. Individual letters have been prepared for First Nations, Inuit and Métis communities. In addition, the bishops have released a letter to Catholics throughout the country.

Copies of the letters can be accessed by visiting: www.archtoronto.org/healingandreconciliation

Catholics throughout the archdiocese are invited to reflect, learn and join in efforts to nurture and deepen our relationship with Indigenous Peoples. We pray that the letters may serve as an additional tool to guide the journey of healing, reconciliation and hope.

CARING FOR THE HOMELESS IN OUR CITY

Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. They are very appreciative.

Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential. The food we donate from our parish often replenishes their empty food bank.

Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.

Your food donations are very important as numbers of people in need continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired.

CASSEROLES FOR THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

Next Weekend, February 25th/26th

Your prepared frozen casseroles will be collected at the Masses next weekend for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre. Many more volunteers are needed to help feed the hungry in our city.

Three recipes are available on St. Gabriel’s web site. Printed copies of the recipes are also available in the Parish Office. Pans can also be picked up here in the office. Please remember to mark the label on the pan lid with the name of the casserole. For more information, you may contact Irene Albrecht at 416 221-2791.

AID FOR SYRIA AND TURKEY

Two devastating earthquakes and hundreds of violent aftershocks in Turkey and Syria have caused great destruction in both countries. The latest reports indicate that there are more than 40,000 people injured and the rising death toll has now surpassed 11,000 people.

The disaster began with a 7.8-magnitude earthquake early Monday morning, one of the strongest to hit the region in 100 years, toppling thousands of buildings throughout Turkey and Syria, creating even worse conditions for millions of Syrians already displaced by the ongoing civil war. Freezing cold weather conditions are complicating rescue operations and adding further risk to survivors.

The Archdiocese of Toronto will accept donations and channel funds through Catholic partners (including Caritas Canada, Aid to the Church in Need, CNEWA, and Jesuits International) to support relief efforts underway.

Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:

Please continue to pray for those who have died and for those displaced because of this tragic disaster in both Turkey and Syria.
