Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Francis (Frank) Leo, (pronounced Lay-o) currently Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Montreal, as the 14th Archbishop of Toronto.
The archbishop-designate succeeds Cardinal Thomas Collins, who has served the archdiocese since 2007. The new archbishop will be installed on the Solemnity of the Annunciation, Saturday March 25th at 10:00 AM at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica.
During this time of transition in the archdiocese, we give thanks for Cardinal Collins and his service to the Church and welcome Archbishop-designate Leo, who will be joining the community very soon. Please continue to keep these shepherds close in prayer in the days ahead.
Two devastating earthquakes and hundreds of violent aftershocks in Turkey and Syria have caused great destruction in both countries. The latest reports indicate that there are more than 44,000 people injured and the rising death toll has now surpassed 11,000 people.
The disaster began with a 7.8-magnitude earthquake early last Monday morning, one of the strongest to hit the region in 100 years, toppling thousands of buildings throughout Turkey and Syria, creating even worse conditions for millions of Syrians already displaced by the ongoing civil war. Freezing cold weather conditions are complicating rescue operations and adding further risk to survivors.
This week, another powerful earthquake was recorded in Turkey. leveling buildings and leaving millions of people homeless.
The Archdiocese of Toronto will accept donations and channel funds through Catholic partners (including Caritas Canada, Aid to the Church in Need, CNEWA, and Jesuits International) to support relief efforts underway.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
Please continue to pray for those who have died and for those displaced because of this tragic disaster in both Turkey and Syria.
Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. They are very grateful.
Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential. The food we donate from our parish often replenishes their empty food bank.
Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.
Your food donations are very important as numbers of people in need continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired
Once again, the CCCB video series Journey through Lent will be available on the CCCB website. This year’s Lenten reflections are delivered by His Eminence Gérald Cyprien Cardinal Lacroix, Archbishop of Quebec and Primate of Canada, and the Most Reverend Brian Joseph Dunn, Archbishop of Halifax-Yarmouth.
Every Monday throughout Lent, a video will continue to be posted on the CCCB website in English and in French for the following Sunday’s eucharistic celebration.
Originally proposed by the Executive Committee, this video series, featuring reflections on the gospel reading for each Sunday of Lent, is a joint project of the Office national de liturgie, the National Liturgy Office, and the Office for Evangelization and Catechesis (English Sector). It is hoped that this video series will provide you with additional opportunity to prepare for the Church’s celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord on Easter.
