WORKSHOP ON ST. PAUL
October 5th – 7th, 2009
Professor Raymond Collins, a renowned New Testament scholar, will be giving a three-evening workshop on St. Paul at our parish on October 5 to 7, 2009 (Mon to Wed), from 7:30 to 9 PM each evening.
Until his retirement in 2006, Father Collins was, for more than three decades, professor of New Testament at the Catholic University of Louvain, Belgium, and then at the Catholic University of America. He is author of numerous books and articles, many focusing on the Pauline epistles. He also writes extensively using his scholarship on the New Testament to help “break the Word” for the homilists as well as the faithful.
Topics for the Workshop:
Oct 5 St. Paul, preacher of the Gospel: in a new time, a new culture, and a new way.
Oct 6 “I commend to you our sister Phoebe” (Rom 16:1): Women in Paul’s ministry
Oct 7 “We proclaim Christ crucified” (1Cor 1:23): the Cross in Paul
If you wish to understand St. Paul better, this is an opportunity not to be missed. For further details, please consult the notice on the bulletin board, or contact Fatima Lee. Please call (416) 221-8866 to register. This will help us with arrangements for the venue.
ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT
The next R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) meetings will be held on Tuesday, October 13th at 8:00 PM and Wednesday, October 14th at 7:30 PM. These evenings are for persons interested in learning about the Catholic Faith. Because the Parish Community itself is considered the official teacher and guide for potential new members, it is important that some parishioners participate by being present and by sharing their Faith in various ways. It is also an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of the faith. Adult Catholics who wish to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist and/or Confirmation are welcome.
For more information, please call Mary Landry at 416 – 293-3760.

SHARELIFE – TROPICAL STORM KETSANA RELIEF
On September 26, Tropical Storm Ketsana (also known as Typhoon Ondoy) struck the Philippines, causing the most severe flooding the country has experienced in more than 40 years.
The ShareLife Office is accepting monetary donations to support disaster relief efforts in the Philippines, assisting in the provision of food, shelter, clean water, and medical and cooking supplies for those affected by the storm and flooding.
Working through the Catholic Church’s official international relief network, Caritas Internationalis, funds will be channelled to Caritas Philippines (NASSA). Initially, NASSA is providing aid for a total of 10,000 families (50,000 people) in the seriously affected areas.
Those wishing to help through a financial contribution may do so in the following ways:
- Online through ShareLife’s website: www.sharelife.org
- Through the ShareLife Office 1-800-263-2595 or 416-934-3411
- Through the Parish, making cheques payable to:
ShareLife – St Gabriels Parish – Tropical Storm Ketsana Relief – Philippines
We offer our prayers for the thousands of families affected by the storm. Thank you for your ongoing efforts to serve those in need, both here at home and around the world. Be assured that ShareLife does not apply any administrative fees to humanitarian relief contributions, ensuring as much money as possible is directed toward assistance of those in crisis.
GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE
Last year, Parish Food Drives helped Good Shepherd Ministries serve more than 290,000 meals to people who would have otherwise have gone hungry. Please help the homeless and hungry within our community by participating in this year’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive.
Urgently needed items include: rice, breakfast cereals, tea and coffee, canned soups, stews, meats, fruits and vegetables, pasta and pasta sauce, macaroni and cheese, sugar, hot chocolate, salt, pepper and spices, condiments.
Your kind donations will make all the difference!
H1N1 FLU VIRUS
Regarding the H1N1 Flu Virus, Archbishop Collins has suggested that we provide hand cleaning stations at the entrance to the Church. If parishioners are feeling ill or have been sick in recent days, they should refrain from receiving Communion on the tongue or from the cup. The “sign of peace:” is an important part of Mass. If you are uncomfortable shaking hands use another gesture such as a bow, a wave of the hand or simply saying “Peace be with you.”
CASSEROLES
Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 32 casseroles for September. For October, your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of October 24/25 for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre. If you require more information or would like to get a copy of the recipe and a casserole pan, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416-221-2791.
EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY BOARD
You may have noticed a new bulletin board in the lower hall leading to the parking garage. This is an employment opportunities board where employers looking for help and individuals looking for work can post their information.
Please bring all notices to the Parish Office for approval.
