PSALM MEDITATION

Psalm 116

All Souls’ Day reminds us of our destiny to be with our God forever.

“I will walk before the Lord, in the land of the living.”

The three sections of Psalm 116 which we sing today take us to God’s great mercy; then to our faith and trust in the face of adversity; and lastly to how precious we are in the eyes of our God. These are but three of nineteen sections in this psalm.

Psalm 116 is consoling. Today we sing verse 5:

“Gracious is the Lord, and righteous;
our God is merciful.
The Lord protects the simple;
When I was brought low, he saved me.”

CARING FOR THE NEEDY IN OUR CITY

Food Collection for the Good Shepherd Centre and Rosalie Hall

Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 32 casseroles in October.

PSALM MEDITATION

Psalm 34

“I will bless the Lord at all times;
his praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Today’s Psalm responds to our first reading from the Book of Sirach.

It’s the prayer of the humble that pierces the clouds, it will not desist until the Most High responds… Indeed, the Lord will not delay.

Jesus’ parable in the Gospel as written for us by Luke teaches us with power!

Being a follower of Jesus is not about thinking how good we are, but about recognizing how much we need God’s mercy.

“The Lord is near to the broken-hearted,
and saves the crushed in spirit.”

PSALM MEDITATION

Psalm 121

All of today’s readings, including Psalm 121, focus on prayer, persistent prayer. God always hears lovingly and always answers.  In the words of Psalm 121: “where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord”

In Exodus, Moses’ arms raised in prayer secure the Israelites’ victory. The Apostle Paul exhorts Timothy to be steadfast in his teaching. Luke’s parable of the persistent widow is clear: the importance of never giving up.

Psalm 121 is a favourite psalm for many.  It will bear fruit in our souls with its prayerful repetition.  In whole or in part.

Here are two suggestions for us to hold prayerfully in our hearts this week:

“The Lord watches over you…”

“The Lord will protect you from all harm…”

THE BEACONS OF HOPE THANK YOU!

The Beacons of Hope group would like to extend our sincerest thanks on behalf of the women’s shelters that we are supporting. Your response to our request for personal care items, pajamas, slippers, towels as well as a vacuum was an overwhelming success! A heartfelt thank you to those who donated items over the past few weeks.
You can be assured that you have made the lives of these women brighter and brought them joy.

Your kind generosity is so appreciated. May you be abundantly blessed.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

Your prepared frozen casseroles are being collected at the Masses next weekend, October 25th and 26th, for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

Good Shepherd provided nearly 390,000 meals last year to people who would otherwise have gone hungry. Please think about volunteering to help feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Parish website. Casserole pans are also available in the Parish Office.

Your support is a tremendous help and is appreciated in the fight to end hunger and chronic homelessness. For more information, you may contact the Parish Office at 416-221-8866.

How do you grow the best flowers?
Through trowel and error.

SHARELIFE

Cardinal Leo encourages you to reach out to your neighbour in need.

“We cannot turn away from the suffering around us, especially when so many struggle just to eat. Our Catholic family is called not only to witness God’s love but to live it boldly: feed the hungry, restore dignity, and stand shoulder to shoulder with those in need. As Scripture reminds us in Isaiah 58:10, ‘If you offer your food to the hungry and satisfy the needs of the afflicted, then your light shall rise in the darkness.’ Together, through these grants and our generous hearts, we bring hope where despair threatens to take hold.”

Please give generously and wholeheartedly through sharelife.org/donate or our parish using a ShareLife envelope. Thank you for living the Gospel.

PSALM MEDITATION

Psalm 98

It’s Thanksgiving and our country’s feast matches today’s Liturgy.

The line from 1 Thessalonians sung in our Gospel Acclamation sums it up: “Give thanks in all circumstances; for that is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Psalm 98 sings our praise of God for God has done wondrous things for us. God has brought victory.
The compelling story of the thankfulness of Naaman the Syrian for being cured of leprosy in 2 Kings, and the story in Luke of the thanks of the one leper whom Jesus healed who came back to give thanks, both speak to us of the importance of thanks. “Where are the other nine?”

As we pray this Psalm, may we recall that all is a gift. For which it’s right to give thanks.

Thomas Aquinas, most eminent theologian and Doctor of the Church, advises that true religion is deep and utter thankfulness and gratitude.

“He has remembered his steadfast love
and faithfulness to the House of Israel…
break forth into joyous song and sing praises.”

BEACONS OF HOPE

To meet the continued need for personal care items, pyjamas, slippers, towels etc., the Beacons of Hope group will be setting up a donation drop off box in the Gathering Space. A list of needed items will be posted at the box and on the bulletin boards. With the exception of slippers and personal care items that must be new, pyjamas, robes, towels could be gently used and clean.

One of the shelters has also made a request for vacuum cleaners. These should be in good working order and clean. Any assistance you could provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your kind generosity!

PSALM MEDITATION

Psalm 95

“O come, let us sing to the Lord,
let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise.”

Today’s liturgy stresses faith, the “good treasure entrusted to us, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us,” as the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Timothy.

Luke recounts the apostles asking the Lord to “increase our faith”.

Habakkuk writes that ”the righteous person lives by their faith”.

This week, let’s take a line from Psalm 95 and carry it with faith in our hearts. Here’s one to consider:

“Let us worship and bow down,
let us kneel before the Lord, our Maker.”

FLOWER FUND

Each year we decorate our worship space for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. In the last few years, the cost of the flowers has increased considerably. For this reason, we are establishing a Flower Fund to help defray the cost of the flowers. If you would like to donate, please bring your donation to the office in an envelope marked Flower Fund.

YOUNG ADULT PASSIONIST RETREAT

October 17th to 19th

Young adults (ages 18 to 30) are invited to attend a retreat in New York from October 17th to 19th. Connect with young adults from St. Gabriel’s and the St. Paul of the Cross Province to explore the Passionist mission and what it means to be disciples of justice.

TRIVIA – Did you know?

In Canada there are three distinct indigenous peoples, First Nations, Metis and Inuit, each with their own culture, languages and traditions. They are credited with the invention of many of the things we know and use today…hockey, lacrosse, the canoe and kayak to name a few. Indigenous art is the oldest surviving art dating from the Ice Age, about 5,000 years ago.
