Hebrews 13:2

Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.

GARDEN SHED

Springtime finds everything growing vigorously, especially the weeds. Indeed, sometimes, they seem like bullies, overtaking and crowding out the slower-growing ferns and flowers. But, even an hour a day of weeding can restrain the progress of, for instance garlic mustard, or even stop it in its tracks.

Let’s give the little guys a helping hand: join our merry band of weeders! Email us at sgpgardenministry@gmail.com.

May 22nd to May 29th

Laudato Si’ Week 2022, to be held May 22nd to May 29th, will mark the seventh anniversary of Pope Francis’ landmark encyclical on creation care. GARDEN SHED

Congratulations to the hardworking confirmands Alice Leung, Cassandra Victorine, Édouard Taylor, Jay Wang, Mark Viado, Richard Antigua and Ryan Jung! In devoting service hours to the care of the garden, they have improved both its health and appearance.

On Saturday, May 14th, the members of the Garden Ministry built two new planting boxes, which greatly increases our capacity to grow food for the Good Shepherd Ministries. We also planted carrots, cucumber, squash, tomatoes, radish, green onions, parsley, and beans, and set up our rainwater harvesting system.

Plant growth at this time of year is staggering and that includes weeds. Help us keep them under control: one hour a day can make a difference. Join the Garden Ministry! Email us at sgpgardenministry@gmail.com

ONTARIO ELECTION DEBATE FROM A CATHOLIC PERSPECTIVE

Wednesday, May 18th at 7:30 PM

The Archdiocese of Toronto is also excited to announce that we will host an Ontario Election Debate from a Catholic Perspective on Wednesday, May 18 starting at 7:30 p.m. You can watch the debate on The Archdiocese of Toronto’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. It will also be broadcast live on Salt+Light TV. The debate will be moderated by Peter Stockland, publisher of The Catholic Register, and will feature representatives from the major political parties.

This debate will build off of the Archdiocese of Toronto’s 2019 Federal Election Debate from a Catholic Perspective, which was viewed by more than 12,000 people and was the #1 trending topics on Twitter in Canada that night.

We believe that the public is eager for substantive, respectful dialogue on political issues, which we will provide with these resources. And we will try to serve the faithful from across the province who are engaged and active citizens.

Please join the conversation by using the hashtag: #CatholicVote2022.

THE GARDEN SHED

OPENING: SUMMER GARDENING POSITION FOR YOUTH

For the third year, St. Gabriel’s has received a Canada Summer Jobs grant from the federal government for a Gardening Helper, between the ages of 15 to 30, to assist with gardening tasks 30 hours per week for 9 weeks, beginning late May. Work can include, but not be limited to watering, weeding, planting, transplanting, soil preparation, pruning, harvesting, mulching, cleaning up debris and care of garden tools. For more information, email sgpgardenministry@gmail.com. To apply, please send your resume to stgabrielsparish@bellnet.ca.

In the space of a couple of weeks, the garden has turned from winter beige to lush green and buds are beginning to open on the fruit trees: blossoms of delicate pink on the cherry trees, neon pink on the peach, white on the apple, yellow on the haskap and more. Why not make an after-mass stroll through the garden a habit so you can watch the buds open and the blossoms turn to fruit?

A PRAYER FOR PEACE IN THE UKRAINE

We pray for the реорlе of Ukraine today.
We pray for реaсе and the laying down
of weapons.
We pray for аll those who fear for tomorrow,
that your Spirit of comfort would draw near to them.
We pray for those with power over war or реасе,
for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions.
Above аll, we pray for аll your precious children,
at-risk and in fear, that you would hold and protect them.
We pray in the name of Jesus, the Prince of Реасе.
Amen.

SHARELIFE

This weekend is ShareLife Sunday

“ShareLife is the way the rubber hits the road. This is how we validate the legitimacy and integrity of our Christian life: not by the words we speak, but by the love we share, in practical ways. That’s what we do with ShareLife.” – Cardinal Thomas Collins

To date, $36,410 has been received at the ShareLife Office and $31,750 has been received at the Parish for a total of $68,160 toward our goal of $198,000.

Please give generously during the ShareLife Sunday collection or at sharelife.org.

Thank you for supporting ShareLife!

BUNDLE UP WEEKEND COMING UP!

Weekend of May 14th/15th

It’s Spring-cleaning Time!

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is collecting gently used clothing, shoes, linens and household goods to support our neighbors in need or to be sold to help support their special works in the community on the weekend of May14th/15th

They cannot accept books, dishes, furniture, appliances, mattresses, construction materials or videos and cassettes. Please bring your donations and help others in your community.

The truck will be open Saturday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Volunteers will be there to assist with loading before and after each Mass.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

There is still time to bring your prepared frozen casseroles to the Church at all the Masses next weekend for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre. We have 33 so far but the need is great.

Please think about volunteering to help feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Parish website. Casserole pans are also available from the Parish Office. If you require more information, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416-221-2791.

UKRAINIAN REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP, CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

St. Gabriel’s Parish is hoping to sponsor at least one Ukrainian family. This will be done under the guidance of the Office for Refugees Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT). These are early days in this initiative and much of the process for being matched with a Ukrainian family in need has yet to be announced. As our Refugee Committee receives information and time lines from ORAT, the parish will be updated.

Sponsorship of a family will require the support of the St. Gabriel’s community in many different ways. If you would like to learn more about the volunteer roles and to sign up, you can access that through the parish website under Ministries, Refugee Committee. If you speak Ukrainian, we would appreciate you identifying that skill through the website.

Since volunteers on the committee will work one on one with the sponsored family members, it is classified as a High Risk Volunteer position by the Archdiocese and screening by the Volunteer Screening Committee is required.

For our Parish, this will be the fourth refugee sponsorship we will have done in the last 10 years.

We thank you, the St. Gabriel Parish members, in advance for your support.

FOOD FOR ROSALIE HALL & GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre.

Your food donations are so important as Covid 19 remains with us and numbers of needy people continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired
