PRAYER FOR THE SAFETY OF RETURNING TO SCHOOL

Father please hear us when we tell You of our concerns of sending our children and educators back to school.

Know that we are striving to make all of the right decisions.

We need Your love and power to help us overcome any difficulties.

Please watch over everyone as times and routines are about to change once again.

We know that we can do anything through You.

Please help us ensure health and semi-normalcy in the coming months.

We give our hearts to You, now and forever. Amen.

FOOD FOR ROSALIE HALL & GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

As you are aware, St. Gabriel’s has always collected food for Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre.

During the pandemic, there was no food collection and shelves were depleted so these organizations are desperate.

Please help if you can by bringing non-perishable foods such as rice, canned goods, powdered milk, coffee, tea sugar, cereal, peanut butter, jam, pasta and sauces. You may place them in the large bin in the Gathering Space.

Thank you to all the parishioners who heeded the announcement and brought food for the Good Shepherd Centre and Rosalie Hall. Your response has been awesome!

CASSEROLES FOR THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 14 casseroles for August.

For September, your prepared frozen casseroles will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of September 26th /27th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

This fall, a great many more volunteers are needed to become active in helping to feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Parish website. Casserole pans are also available in the Parish Office. If you require more information please contact Irene Albrecht at 416-221-2791.

BUNDLE UP WEEKEND FOR THE SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

Weekend of September 19th/20th

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is collecting gently used clothing, shoes and linens and household goods to support our neighbors in need or to be sold to help support their special works in the community on the weekend of September 19th/20th.

They cannot accept books, dishes, furniture, appliances, mattresses, construction materials or videos and cassettes. Please bring your donations and help others in your community.

The truck will be open Saturday from 10:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Sunday from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Volunteers will be there to assist with loading before and after each Mass.

THE GARDEN SHED

As our gardens begin their long slide into dormancy, here are a few highlights from the summer of 2020. Abundant harvests from our community garden have been delivered to the Good Shepherd Ministries: lettuce, chard, cucumber, beans, peas, carrots, beets, celery, onions, scallions, zucchini, haskap berries, currants and several herbs Still to come will be more beets, carrots, lettuce, arugula, squash and radish.

The two donation gardens that showcase plants from parishioners’ gardens were mulched this spring and have fared well through the heat. Strolling through the north garden you can enjoy the lilies, anise and Joe Pyeweed attracting loads of insects and butterflies. The south garden continues to offer radiant displays of giant ferns, smooth oxeye and calendula, with hairy beardtongue beginning to wane.

Plans are moving forward to plant a cover crop in the cleared area of the south garden just west of the mulched pathway. Do have a look! For more information on the Garden Ministry, please email Heather Bennett at heathermjb@gmail.com.

PONTIFICAL COLLECTION FOR THE HOLY LAND

Weekend of September 12th/13th

The Pontifical Collection in support of the Holy Land, usually collected on Good Friday was cancelled when churches were closed due to the pandemic. Pope Francis has requested that it be taken up on the weekend of September 12th /13th.

The Annual Holy Land Collection not only helps to maintain churches and shrines located at holy sites, but it also helps to support the pastoral, welfare, educational and social works the Church undertakes in caring for the local population. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis invites you to be in solidarity with the Church and the Christians in the Holy Land. Please be as generous as your means allow.

As well, there are several other collections that were missed during the pandemic which will be taken in addition to regular parish collections.

The schedule is as follows:
Needs of the Church in Canada – weekend of September 26th/27th, 2020
Pope’s Pastoral Works – weekend of October 3rd/4th, 2020
World Mission Sunday – weekend of October 17th/18th, 2020
The Shepherds’ Trust – weekend of November 14th/15th, 2020

The Finance Council wishes to share this with all who come together as our worshipping community.

“The financial burden of the Parish is the responsibility of each and all parishioners to the extent that your means allow.”

Please consider giving your offertory by picking up Envelopes, enrolling in Pre-Authorized Giving (PAG), or Donate Now (through the Archdiocese of Toronto website). Please come by the parish office if you have any questions.

R.C.I.A. AND ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Meetings in preparation for the R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin in October. These meetings are for persons interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. The exploration may lead the candidate to seek baptism and become a member of the Catholic Christian community; or for Christians already baptized into another Christian denomination, the reception into the Catholic Church.

Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation but who wish to do so are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

As well, these meetings may be an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of our faith. Very often, especially for those of us who received our religious instruction at an early age, we tend to grow physically, mentally, psychologically etc., but the understanding of our faith does not grow correspondingly. The RCIA may serve as a good opportunity for us to ask questions and to develop a more adult understanding of our faith.

If you are interested in joining the RCIA meetings or if you would like to have more information about it, please contact Sr. Maria Lucia at 416-221-8866.

PRAYER DURING COVID 19

When this is over,
may we never again take for granted
a handshake with a stranger
conversations with neighbors
a crowded theater
Friday night out
the taste of Communion
a routine checkup
the school rush each morning
coffee with a friend
the stadium roaring
each deep breath
a boring Tuesday
life itself.
When this ends,
may we find that we have become
more like the people we wanted to be,
we were called to be,
we hoped to be.
And may we stay that way – better for each other because of the worst.
Amen

PRAYER DURING COVID 19

O God,
We gather together separated by life-saving distancing, but united more than ever in spirit;
For all in direct patient care; give them strength for their service and strength to ask for help when they are in need.
God, protect them.
For all the sick; bring them to full health and restore them to those who love them.
God, protect them.
For all those isolated in their homes; sustain them in joy and peace.
God, protect them.
For all those who have died and those who grieve their loss in isolation; comfort them in their sorrow.
God, protect them.
For decision-makers at all levels; send them your wisdom and good counsel to serve their communities.
God, protect them.
We pray that a cure and vaccine will soon be available,
And that we all – family, friends, all Canadians, the entire world may be healed in body and spirit.

Amen.

PRAYER DURING COVID 19

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.
Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another.

Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.
Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.
Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace.

Jesus Christ, heal us.

Over 10 weeks of counselling, they learned to take the risk of being honest rather than using deceit to keep the peace. Phil and Helen found a new sense of confidence as a couple and starting feeling excited about the arrival of their baby.

Your gift to ShareLife is helping!

Did you know that while parishes remain closed, ShareLife agencies are as busy as ever? That’s because those who are poor and marginalized are disproportionately affected during a crisis. Your support of ShareLife ensures Catholic agencies can continue their work on the front lines, helping the many people who are suffering. Please give securely online at sharelife.org/donate.

Due to Covid 19, the ShareLife collections have been postponed. Parishioners can contribute online at sharelife.org/donate or by dropping off or mailing their contribution to the parish office.

FOOD FOR ROSALIE HALL & GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

Each month food we collect is sent to Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. Unfortunately, with the current COVID-19 situation, we cannot accept any food donations at this time.

While we wait for updates from these outreach ministries, let us always be mindful of what they do.

Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential through the provision of a wide range of child development, community, residential and educational services.

Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs.

ONGOING COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICES

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Catholic Family Services have moved their counselling and psychotherapy services online in an effort to continue to help their clients who are struggling with their mental well-being in this difficult time.

If you are suffering from mild to moderate mental health issues or are experiencing difficulty in your relationships, we encourage you to reach out to them and take a step towards a happier and healthier life. Catholic Family Services offer a variety of services, so whether you are an individual, couple, or family, their counsellors will explore your concerns with you and help you work towards your goals.

Sessions are conducted through the OnCall Health platform, which provides you and your counsellor with a secure and private video connection, since your privacy and confidentiality is of the utmost importance to them. Our mausolea remain closed until further notice. Entry to the cemetery and mausolea during regular operating hours will only be provided to those attending a funeral or burial, those with a scheduled appointment and for essential deliveries.

Physical distancing requirements and attendee number restrictions are in place at all times in keeping with provincial Guidelines.

FINANCE CORNER

Although our Churches have remained closed since March 15th, 2020, our outreach programs and pastoral presence remain active.

Because there were no Masses celebrated with public participation, there were no offertory collections taken up. The reality is that our parishes rely on the support of their parishioners to operate through weekly offertory collections. Parish salaries, programs and ongoing operating costs (heating, water, electricity, etc.) are funded through the generosity of its parishioners. There is a challenge for the parish to maintain operations without the weekly offertory collection.

Monthly contributions to the Parish by monthly Pre-Authorized Giving or by credit card through “Donate Now” continue automatically.

Please consider changing your offertory giving, at this time, to monthly Pre-Authorized Giving. Forms are available at the Parish office or on-line at the Parish website in the “Weekly Giving” section under the Finances tab.

You may also mail in or drop off your offertory envelope at the parish office on weekdays and weekends at regular hours.
