ECO-SABBATH

Sunday, October 2nd at 11:30 AM in the Gabriel Room

St Gabriel’s has a long tradition of hosting the Eco-Sabbath every first Sunday of the month. This year, the tradition will continue. The first meeting of this year after the summer break will be held on October 2nd, at 11:30 AM. All are invited.

CHILDREN’S FAITH PROGRAM

The Children’s Faith Program for children attending private or public schools will begin on Sunday, September 11th at 10:00 AM. Classes are held at St. Gabriel’s School. Registration forms may be picked up in the Parish Office.

Please note that a separate Sacramental registration form is required if your child will receive the sacraments of First Communion, Reconciliation or Confirmation during the 2016/17 year. These forms are also available in the Parish Office.

R.C.I.A. AND ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Meetings in preparation for the R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin soon. These meetings are for persons interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. The exploration may lead the candidate to seek baptism, and become a member of the Catholic Christian community; or for Christians already baptized into another Christian denomination, the reception into the Catholic Church.

Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation but who wish to do so are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

As well, these meetings may be an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of our faith. Very often, especially for those of us who received our religious instruction at an early age, we tend to grow physically, mentally, psychologically etc., but the understanding of our faith does not grow correspondingly. The RCIA may serve as a good opportunity for us to ask questions and to develop a more adult understanding of our faith.

If you are interested in joining the RCIA meetings or if you would like to have more information about it, please call Fatima Lee at the Parish Office, 416-221-8866, ext. 228.

SCHOOL AGE CHILDREN PREPARING FOR BAPTISM

If you have, or know of, school age children (ages 7 to 14) who wish to prepare for Baptism, please contact the Parish Office, or Fatima Lee directly, at (416) 221-8866, ext. 228. Classes for them will begin after Thanksgiving.

ST. GABRIEL’S MUSIC MINISTRY

“Those who sing pray twice.”

Our junior choir practices on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8:00 PM and leads the music at the 12:30 PM Mass.

We always welcome new voices and hope you will consider joining us! For more information, please contact the choir director after any of the Masses.

GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE CASSEROLES

Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 31 casseroles for July and 30 casseroles for August.. For September, your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of September 24th/25th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

More volunteers are encouraged to become active in helping to feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Church website.

ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) meetings begin in the fall. These evenings are for persons interested in learning about the Catholic Faith. Because the Parish Community itself is considered the official teacher and guide for potential new members, it is important that some parishioners participate by being present and by sharing their Faith in various ways. It is also an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of the faith. Adult Catholics who wish to celebrate the Sacrament of the Eucharist and/or Confirmation are welcome. For more information, please call the Parish Office at 416-221-8866

FOOD FOR ROSALIE HALL & GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

We encourage you to continue bringing non perishable foods for Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre during the summer months.

During July and August, food donations tend to drop off.

Your donations of canned foods, cereal rice and other non perishables are more important than ever as families
struggle to make ends meet.

Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired. Thank you for your generous support.

CASSEROLES FOR THE GOOD SHEPHERD CENTRE

Thank you to all who prepared casseroles for the Good Shepherd Centre for the month of June. Your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of July 30th/31st and August 27th/28th.

Each month, the casseroles are picked up early on Monday morning for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

Lately, many people are bringing in casseroles after the pick up day, meaning that they are left in our freezer for an additional month. Please try to get them in on time.

More volunteers are needed to help feed the hungry in our city. We encourage you to pick up a copy of a casserole recipe and a pan and give it a try. Three recipes are available on St. Gabriel’s web site. Printed copies of the recipes are also available in the Parish Office. Please remember to mark the label on the pan lid with the name of the casserole.

Thank you to all parishioners who are recycling their clean, flattened milk bags at the church.

The Milk Bag Workshops, held by Sharon Gusz this spring were very successful. Thank you to Sharon and all the milk bag weavers for their excellent work. Workshops will begin again in the fall.

Sharon recently shared some exciting news with us.

“I find it so rewarding to be part of this amazing project.

By the way the last few mats that we made are being sent to a homeless shelter in Newmarket. There are several people who are reluctant to sleep on the regular mattresses.. (bed bugs, smells, etc..). I gave them 15 mats to try out and got an email asking for 10 more!!!”

LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD

Wednesday, June 8th at 7:30 PM
Gabriel Room.

As you all know, St Gabriel’s is a Passionist Parish. Priests who serve the parish community belong to the Congregation of the Passion (Passionists). Their motto is “May the passion of Christ be always in our hearts”.

The Passionists would like very much to strengthen its relationship with the laity. To this end, the Passionist Province of St Paul of the Cross, to which our priests belong, has set up a Commission on the Laity.
The Chair of the Commission, Mr. Ernest Rivard, will be visiting the parish for a listening session – to hear your voices on how that relationship could be strengthened.

All are welcome to attend. The listening session will be held on Wednesday, June 8th, at 7:30 PM in the Gabriel Room.

Working wonders with families in our neighbourhoods…

A few years ago, Lauren was hospitalized at 16 years of age after receiving a severe beating from her mother. The violence had been going on for several months, and Lauren was afraid to talk about it. Eventually, her mother faced charges of abuse and Lauren was removed from her family’s home. She came to Sancta Maria House looking for a more permanent, safe place to live. Lauren spent that last 2 years here and has made many positive gains. Through the counseling of supportive staff, she was able to let go of the anger from her past and focus on making a bright future for herself. Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 62 casseroles for May. For June, your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of June 25th/26th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

Please pick up a copy of a recipe and a pan from the Parish Office and give it a try. The recipes are also available on the St. Gabriel’s website. Remember to mark the label on the pan lid with the name of the casserole. For more information, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416 221-2791.

THOSE WHO SING PRAY TWICE

This weekend, on the Feast of Corpus Christi the choir will be singing Exultate Justi in Latin. To help you to appreciate the hymn more fully, here is the English translation.

Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones:
It is fitting for the upright ones to give praise.
Acknowledge the Lord with the harp.
Sing to him with a psaltery of ten strings.
Sing to him a new song.
Sing praises to him well with a loud voice.

At this time we also would like to take the opportunity to thank our musicians, choirs and cantors for their prayerful contributions to our liturgies.

SHARELIFE

Working wonders for people in our homes and parishes…

In 2012, Nadia was brought to Street Haven’s emergency shelter by the police. She was an immigrant from India and had been locked in a garage by her husband and mother-in-law for two years, rarely able to visit the two children.

Upon her arrival at Street Haven, Nadia thrived. She slowly built trust with the counselors, participated in household responsibilities, and loved looking after the gardens. Her counselor set Nadia up with a lawyer and after a year of legal consultations, she received custody of her two children. Street Haven helped them find housing and Nadia and her children now live in a beautiful, safe home where they have started a new chapter in their lives.
