AN ADVENT EVENING OF REFLECTION

“Truth and Reconciliation: An Opportunity for All Canada”

November 25, 2015 (Wednesday), 7:30 pm, at St Gabriel’s

Bishop Mark MacDonald, the first National Indigenous Bishop of the Anglican Church of Canada, will be the speaker for the evening. As we prepare for Christmas, the season of Advent asks us to focus on how Jesus, the God who dwelled among us, brings light and hope in darkness and suffering. Last May, the Report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada brought to light the suffering and pain of our Aboriginal brothers and sisters in Canada, and suggested paths for moving forward towards reconciliation. Advent seems to be the right season to reflect on how we can move towards reconciliation in our own lives, as well as on how we, as a country, can work towards reconciliation, especially with our First Nations peoples.

Educated in both Canada and the U.S., Bishop MacDonald has had a long and varied ministry in different dioceses in both countries. He has published widely in areas of faith and environment, and inter-cultural ministry, including ministries to Native American youth. He is also a Third Order Franciscan.

We are most privileged to have Bishop MacDonald coming to our parish to speak about the suffering and pain that the indigenous peoples have experienced, and to shed light on a path of reconciliation on which all Canadians can embrace together in solidarity, equality, and mutual respect. It is an opportunity not to be missed, please mark your calendar and join us for the evening.

To facilitate our planning, please let us know if you plan to attend. You can call the Parish Office (416) 221-8866 or email Fatima Lee at fatimalee@bellnet.ca.

Responding to the call of our Cardinal, please take a moment to sign Development and Peace’s Action Card today. In addition to pledging to reduce your own carbon footprint, the Card contains also a message to the Prime Minister asking him to sign on to an agreement at COP21 that sets the target to keep the rise in temperature below 2°C and to be a leader in achieving that target.

If you’ve missed the parish campaign you can sign the card at: https://www.devp.org/en/education/fall2015/action.

ST. PAUL OF THE CROSS FEAST DAY – OCTOBER 19th

St. Paul of the Cross was the founder of the Passionists in the year 1720. Born in northern Italy in 1694, Paul experienced conversion at the age of 15 and began a lifetime of devotion to prayer life as a soldier, but left after one year. Six years later, having had several visions, he determined that his vocation was to found an order dedicated to the passion of our Lord. Officials declared the visions authentic and Paul withdrew to write a rule. He was joined by his brother, who remained with him for the rest of his life. By 1747, the Passionists had three houses and were preaching missions throughout Italy. At his death in 1775,
Paul was establishing a congregation for Passionist nuns.

STUDY GROUP ON LAUDATO SI’ AT ST. GABRIEL’S

For all who are interested in getting to know more about the encyclical, and to reflect on it, a study group is being held at St. Gabriel’s. There are five more meeting, studying one chapter at each meeting.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE “CREATE A CLIMATE OF CHANGE” CAMPAIGN, OCTOBER 24th/25th

Cardinal Collins has designated the weekend of Oct. 24th/25th for D&P’s “Create a climate of change” campaign.

In his recent encyclical Laudato Si’ (161), Pope Francis reminds us that:
“The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even
now periodically occur in different areas of the world. The effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive action, here and now.”

Today in the Gathering Space, you will get to know more about the “Create a climate of change” Campaign of Development and Peace. Please pick up prayer cards, pamphlets, and other information material about why and how we are asked to create a climate change.

During the next weekend, you will be invited to consider signing a pledge card to commit to reducing your carbon footprint, and at the same time, ask our Government to commit to taking action on climate change.
Here are some of the ways suggested on the pledge card on how one can reduce one’s carbon footprint. You may wish to first give it some thought as to what you can do:

o Making my home more energy-efficient and reducing my energy use.
o Carpooling, using public transport, walking, and bicycling whenever possible.
o Choosing local, organic, and fair trade options whenever possible.
o Reducing waste by buying less, re-using, repairing, recycling, and composting.

This year the attendance count will continue on the weekends of October17th /18th and 24th/25th. The purpose of the count is to have a more accurate assessment of the number of people attending Mass on a weekend.

As with last year, when you come in for Mass, you may notice a few “counters” clicking on tally counters at the doors of the church. The counters will be doing their jobs in a way as discreetly and non-intrusively as possible.

Thank you for your support.

“The pace of consumption, waste and environmental change has so stretched the planet’s capacity that our contemporary lifestyle, unsustainable as it is, can only precipitate catastrophes, such as those which even now periodically occur in different areas of the world. The effects of the present imbalance can only be reduced by our decisive action, here and now.”

On this beautiful Thanksgiving weekend, we give thanks for all our blessings – food, water, clean air, loving relationships, and the privilege to live in a country as blessed as ours! In this spirit of thanksgiving, perhaps we can reflect too, at the invitation of Pope Francis, on whether there is a “cost to our abundance”

STUDY GROUP ON LAUDATO SI’ AT ST. GABRIEL’S

Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, which is addressed to all men and women of good will, reminds us the earth is our common home; yet because humankind has not been using the gifts of creation responsibly, the earth is suffering, the poor and vulnerable amongst us are also suffering. We need to work towards an ecological conversion.

For all who are interested in getting to know more about the encyclical, and to reflect on it, a study group will be held at St. Gabriel’s. We’ll be meeting six times, beginning October 5th, studying one chapter at each meeting.

The Co-leaders of the Study Group will be Fr. Steve Dunn, CP and Dr. Dennis O’Hara.

Dates of Meetings: Mondays:
October 5th, 19th, November 2nd, 16th, 30th, and December 7th.
Time: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM.

The meetings are free of charge, but donations will be gratefully accepted.

To register or for further enquiries, please call the Parish Office (416) 221-8866 or email Fatima Lee at fatimalee@bellnet.ca.

R.C.I.A. AND ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Meetings in preparation for the R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin soon. These meetings are for persons interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. The exploration may lead the candidate to seek baptism, and become a member of the Catholic Christian community; or for Christians already baptized into another Christian denomination, the reception into the Catholic Church.

Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation but who wish to do so are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

As well, these meetings may be an opportunity for “Born Catholics” to deepen their understanding of our faith. Very often, especially for those of us who received our religious instruction at an early age, we tend to grow physically, mentally, psychologically etc., but the understanding of our faith does not grow correspondingly. The RCIA may serve as a good opportunity for us to ask questions and to develop a more adult understanding of our faith.

If you are interested in joining the RCIA meetings or if you would like to have more information about it, please call the Parish Office at 416-221-8866. You can also contact Fatima Lee directly at ext. 228.
