The Wise Still Seek Him – Homily, January 6

A number of years ago a home in the parish had a striking Christmas decoration. In the picture window there was a large silhouette shows the Magi following the star. The whole picture was in different shades of blue except for the bright light of the single star. The caption at the bottom of this beautiful scene read. “Wise Men Still Seek Him.” (more…)

Homily – December 30

Mary and Joseph and Jesus were a Holy and a troubled family – troubled from the word ‘go.’ Mary was pregnant before her marriage – Joseph had a mind to call off the wedding but in some way these two young people knew God was asking something special of them. We’ve just celebrate the birth of Mary’s first born under heartbreaking circumstances, in a stable meant for animals. Her son’s first bed was in a feeding trough. Forty days after his birth while fulfilling the requirements of the law that every first born Jewish male was to be dedicated to the Lord a strange man named Simeon intruded into this happy occasion and basically told Mary this child or yours is going to break your heart. Go in Haste

The person who should be preaching this Sunday should be a pregnant woman. Only she could grasp the dynamics of the visit of Mary to Elizabeth. These two chosen and expectant mothers meet. Mary frightened by the mystery of it all, “the holy spirit will come upon you and the child we be called ‘son of God.’” And Elizabeth overwhelmed by the wonder of it all. “she who is called barren is now in her sixth month, for nothing is impossible with God” Elizabeth’s unborn child catches his mother’s excitement at the unexpected visit of her cousin Mary and leaps in his mother’s womb.
