In today’s readings we have the story of two widows. The widow of Zarephath did not hesitate to share the little she had meant for her own survival and that of her son with this total stranger. At first Elijah just asked her for some water. Then he wanted some bread. But she had nothing but a handful of flour and a few drops of oil to prepare a final meal for herself and her son. Then they would wait for death. How desperate can one be? “Do not fear,” the prophet said. “Do as you were planning, but give me some as well. You will not run out.” The three of them were able to eat for a year: the prophet, the woman, the child. The flour did not vanish. The oil did not go dry. (more…)

Sunday, November 4th, 2012All the great faiths of the world have a core code that expresses all the rest of its teachings. “Hear O Israel the Lord our God is one God and you shall love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” This prayer is known as the Shema and is the daily prayer of all devout Jews. In Hebraic thought, heart, soul, and strength do not mean separate human faculties but the person in the totality of his/her being. Let me see again
Sunday, October 28th, 2012My teacher let me see again. This tells us that Bartimaeus could see at one time in his life. Whatever happened, gradually or suddenly Bartmaeus lost the gift of sight. He had to adapt his life to his new reality of darkness. Not being able to see, he couldn’t work. Not being able to work he was forced to beg to support his family. It must have been a humiliating experience to be so reduced. (more…)

Sunday, October 21st, 2012Mark tells us Jesus was leading his discipline to Jerusalem and some them were afraid because Jesus had just told them of what his future would be: the son of man will be handed over to the chief priests and the scribes and they will condemn him to death and they will hand him over to the gentiles and they will mock him and spit on him and flog him and kill him and after three day he will rise again. He never stayed in one place, he was sent to the lost sheep of the house of Israel and they were in every town and place.
