The Song, Not the Singer

There is a story told of a young Spanish priest whose best friend was a revolutionary during the time of Franco’s dictatorship in Spain. The revolutionary was caught by the police, tried and sentenced to death. The priest went to see him the night before his execution to anoint him and give him Holy Communion. To his surprise his life long friend refused the sacraments. He told the priest he never believed in ‘all that stuff. The priest was confused and said, ’we’ve been friends all our lives, I don’t understand.’

His friend replied, ‘for me it has always been the singer, not the song.’ (more…)

Encore, Encore

There’s a story told of a little Italian opera company on tour traveling from town to town. On one occasion the leading man sang an aria. When he finished the audience called for an encore. So he sang it again and again with more calls for an encore. This happened about five times and the singer was tired and confused. He shrugged his shoulders and looked at the crowd. There was silence, and then someone from the audience shouted ‘you’re going to sing it til you get it right.’ (more…)

Shall We Gather at the River

If you have been watching the news this past week you’ve seen the devastating power of water. In Australia whole areas of cities and towns are under flood waters. Rivers no longer able to absorb the heavy rains of the past weeks left their banks and devastated homes and farmlands over wide areas of Queensland, showing once again that water can be a source of life or death. Mathew’s gospel is filled with powerful imagery. A guiding star, wise strangers from a distant land searching for a new born king, an insecure king, craftily seeking the advice of his priests and scribes as to when and where such a king might be born. The wise men’s search ends at a simple home in Bethlehem where they find the child with his proud mother and father. They do him homage and offer their symbolic gifts. The Refugee Holy Family

We’ve just had too much happening in too short a time – our liturgical feasts come too close together to give us a chance to absorb the wonders we celebrate. Yesterday we celebrated the wonder of the Son of God emptying himself of divinity and clothing himself our humanity – flesh of our flesh, bone of our bone. Through his passion and death he would make real the wonder St. Paul speaks of in his letter to the Ephesians, “before the world began God chose us in Christ to be his adopted sons and daughters.” Christ emptied himself of divinity that we might come to share in his riches. Christ entered our families that we might be members of His. (more…)
