Please support our fight against hunger at sharelife.org/donate or by giving at the parish with a ShareLife envelope. Thank you for heeding the Lord’s call to feed the hungry in our community and beyond.

Two natural disasters have recently struck the region of North Africa with a devastating earthquake in Morocco followed by severe flooding in Libya caused by Storm Daniel.
On Friday, September 8th, 2023, in the High Atlas Mountain region of Morocco, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake – the largest in the country since 1969 – caused extreme damage to buildings and property and has claimed the lives of at least 2,900 to date with another 5,500 people injured. Since the region is not traditionally prone to large seismic activity, buildings are not built to withstand such large tremors.
Two days later, on Sunday, September 10th, a Mediterranean hurricane-type event known as a “medicane” struck shore and quickly overwhelmed the port town of Derna in Libya. “Storm Daniel” delivered more than 400mm of rain within 24-hours and swept away families, took down buildings and bridges and completely overwhelmed dams which burst allowing rain waters to flood the streets of the town. Entire neighbourhoods were washed out to sea due to the storm that displaced over 30,000 people, with 10,000 more missing or unaccounted for. As of today, the flood has taken the lives of more than 11,000 people.
While rescue operations are ongoing in both countries, the process is very slow and there is a strong likelihood that the death toll will rise exponentially in the coming days and weeks.
For those interested in supporting humanitarian relief efforts to help those in need, please note the following:
Humanitarian Aid for Morocco – The Archdiocese of Toronto will accept donations and channel funds through our Catholic partners in Morocco to support relief efforts underway.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website – www.archtoronto.org
By phone through the Development Office – 416-934-3411
Through the parish, making cheques payable to: St. Gabriel’s Passionist Parish, Morocco Earthquake – Humanitarian Relief
Humanitarian Aid for Libya – Currently, our Catholic partners are not present in Libya to coordinate relief efforts and as such we are unable to accept donations to aid those affected by the flooding at this time. For those wishing to offer support to the people of Libya, please consider a gift through the Canadian Red Cross in the following ways:
Online through the Red Cross website – www.redcross.ca
By phone through the Red Cross – 1-800-418-1111
Please continue to pray for those who have died, for those who are missing or displaced because of these tragic disasters in both Morocco and Libya and for all who are working hard to provide relief and rescue in both locations.
The Good Shepherd Centre has now reopened its dining room so that guests can enjoy having their meals inside.
St. Gabriel’s volunteers help serve the meal every second Monday of each month with shifts from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM and 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. There is carpooling from the Church to the Centre. We are looking to add volunteers to this ministry starting the month of November. If you are interested, please contact the office for more details. Thank you.
Next Weekend, September 30th/October 1st

The Justice & Peace & the Integrity of Creation Committee
This weekend, September 23-24 and up to October 1st, our parish through the Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committee and in collaboration with the Canadian Library Project will have a micro gallery display in our Gathering Space. Hopefully this will assist us in observing and commemorating the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day which is normally observed on September 30th each year.
The micro gallery display will consist of books that have been “individually covered in Indigenous-inspired fabric, and arranged on bookshelves. The names of lives lost, printed in gold letters, are placed on the spines of these books to individually respect and honour the thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women, girls and children.” It is the hope of TLC and the JPIC at St. Gabriel’s that “the visual representation of the books covered in glorious Indigenous fabrics and the names of those lost, printed on the spines of the books, will evoke in us a sense of empathy, understanding & desire to see change.”
Coincidentally, the Archdiocese of Toronto will hold a special collection to support the Indigenous Healing & Reconciliation Fund. “The fund will support both local and national programs proposed by Indigenous communities to nurture the ongoing reconciliation journey.”

Sunday, September 24th
Cathedral of the Transfiguration 10350 Victoria Square Blvd, Markham
The theme announced by His Holiness Pope Francis for this year’s World Day of Migrants and Refugees is “Free to Choose Whether to Migrate or to Stay.”. In his message, Pope Francis acknowledges that while the decision to migrate should always be free, in many cases it is not. This point was reflected by St. John Paul II in his message for the 90th World Day of Migrants & Refugees, in which he wrote, “building conditions of peace means in practice being seriously committed to safeguarding first of all the right not to emigrate, that is, the right to live in peace and dignity in one’s own country.” As he concluded his message, Pope Francis referenced the words of the Lord when He said “…I was a stranger, and you welcomed me” reminding us that the Lord’s words are a “constant admonition to see in the migrant not simply a brother or sister in difficulty, but Christ himself, who knocks at our door.”
This occasion will be marked with the celebration of Mass, which will take place on Sunday, September 24th, 2023, at 12:00 PM. at the Cathedral of the Transfiguration, located at 10350 Victoria Square Blvd. in Markham. Monsignor Makarios Wehbi will preside, and Bishop John Boissonneau will be the homilist. A short program will follow. All are welcome
For those who have not yet contributed to ShareLife, you may still do so. Envelopes are at the back of the church. Please be as generous as your means allow.
Please check the expiry date as we cannot pass on expired foods. Please no fresh or frozen foods.
We thank you for your generous support!

With Roberto Chiotti, the Church Architect After each Mass on the Weekend of September 23rd /24th
During the course of the two sessions on exploring our parish’s Journey Forward back in March and April, a number of parishioners expressed interest in learning more about St. Gabriel’s Church and its connection to and reflection of the mission of the Passionist Community.
Roberto Chiotti, the architect who designed the church, has generously offered to give a short presentation and “tour” of the building and will be doing so after each Mass on the weekend of September 23rd and 24th. Please save the date(s) and plan to join us after any of those Masses!

The members of our committee would like to thank the many parishioners who participated in the Justice and Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) survey last June 2023. You have helped us identify the issues that are important to you and for the parish to be involved with. Homelessness and Food Insecurity were identified as major concerns, as well as issues regarding our Indigenous brothers and sisters.
While our parish is already actively involved with the issues of homelessness and food insecurity, our JPIC committee members will soon meet to discuss the possibility of providing additional support regarding those issues. We will also be looking at increasing our awareness about Indigenous issues. On this matter, we will include in next week’s bulletin information about the Canadian Library Project and the Orange Shirt Day in time for the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation which is observed each year on the 30th of September.
If you need any other information, please contact the co-chairs of JPIC Helen Pierre and/or Lily D’Gama or Sr. Malou at StGabrielJPIC@gmail.com.

Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre. They are very grateful.
Rosalie Hall, assists young parents and their children, offering prenatal supports including prenatal classes, nutrition and can help find a child care provider.

We want to bring to your attention that the roof of the Church is in need of repair. The repair work will begin in early August and will conclude in late September. This is a major expense of approximately $500,000 that will be funded by our reserve fund.
In the fall, the finance committee will be outlining some ways and means to begin replenishing the funds over time.
We thank you for your understanding and patience during the time of the roof repair.
