As you may know, the Archdiocese has asked us as either individuals or as a parish, to host Ukrainian families fleeing the war in the Ukraine. The numbers are stunning. Canada has received 676,000 applications; 378,000 applications have been approved and 115,000 Ukrainians have arrived. (Nov 15) The challenge now is accommodation.
Our parish refugee committee is committed to hosting a Ukrainian family but the challenge we have run into is the cost of rental accommodation in the Toronto area. The committee currently has funds to house a family for only three months. This does not provide much stability for newcomers while they get settled, learn English and find employment. We would like to provide a longer time frame for accommodation and support for the newcomers we will sponsor to provide more stability and support. To that end, we have been looking for private rental accommodation and are also looking to team up with other parishes who might like to support our efforts. We are also asking for your assistance by asking you to contribute to a second collection the weekend of Nov 26 & 27. Hopefully we can, together, live the gospel of Mathew.

During Advent, the Society of St Vincent de Paul, St. Gabriel Conference, will have a Giving Tree in the Gathering Space. The tree will be decorated with gift stars.
We invite you to take a star, buy a Walmart or Canadian Tire gift card for about $50 and bring it with the star attached to the Parish Office.

At this time of the year, we are also thinking of the young mothers and babies of Rosalie Hall. If you wish to help, you may choose a “Christmas Stocking” from the tree to purchase pyjamas or undershirts for little ones, age 6 months to 5 years.
Sweaters or hoodies would also be very welcome. Unwrapped Items with the original stocking tag attached can be left in the box provided near the giving tree no later than Sunday, December 10th. Toys or books for these little ones would also be appreciated.
For the Moms, we are suggesting gift cards from Tim Horton’s, Walmart or MacDonald’s. These can be placed in the cards provided and brought to the Office. Thank you for your continued generosity.

The pontifical charity, Aid to the Church in Need (ACN Canada), and the Archdiocese of Toronto invite all to participate in the Red Wednesday Prayer Vigil, on November 16th, at 7:00 PM at St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica. The annual event intends to raise awareness about the alarming situation of persecuted Christians worldwide, to remember those who have perished as victims of their religious beliefs, and to pray for religious freedom. On that day, St. Michael’s Cathedral Basilica, among other important buildings, such as the largest Shrine dedicated to St. Joseph in Canada, Montreal, QC., will be lit in red to symbolize the martyr’s blood. Please remember there are many other ways to contribute to this day, such as wearing red and inviting others to do the same. Share your pictures of solidarity on social media channels with the hashtag #RedWednesday, or hold a fundraiser to help the affected communities.

Devastating floods in Pakistan have displaced hundreds of thousands, at one point leaving a third of the country inundated with water. More than 1,500 people have died following record rainfall with 33 million throughout the country affected by this disaster.
Since June, Pakistan has experienced three times more rainfall than an average monsoon season. Flooding and landslides have destroyed homes, crops, health centres, roads and bridges.
There is an elevated risk of the spread of malaria, dengue fever and other diseases. Priorities include clean water, shelter and health care for those directly affected by this tragic situation.
The Archdiocese of Toronto will channel donations through Catholic partners (including Caritas Canada – Development and Peace as well as the Archdiocese of Karachi) to support relief efforts underway. Please note that these organizations are not subject to the government matching funds program.

Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential through the provision of a wide range of child development, community, residential and educational services.
Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 32 casseroles for October. For November, your prepared frozen casseroles will be collected at all the Masses on the weekend of November 26th/ / 27th to be delivered to the Good Shepherd Centre.
You may pick up a copy of a casserole recipes and a pan from the Parish Office. Three recipes are also available on St. Gabriel’s web site. Please remember to mark the label on the pan lid with the name of the casserole.

There will be a second collection next weekend for The Shepherds’ Trust. The mission of The Shepherds’ Trust is to help ensure that elderly and disabled priests are provided with sufficient financial resources to lead a dignified life after many years of ministry. Your generous gift will help our priests to maintain a modest but active and independent lifestyle in their retirement years. For priests who are ill or otherwise infirm, the Trust ensures they have access to nursing home facilities and medical care. Thank you for your support of this important work.

Are you able to host a Ukrainian Family?
When hearing reports of the war in Ukraine, and the millions of Ukrainians that have been forced to flee their homeland, many have asked what they can do to help. Over 80,000 Ukrainians have already arrived to Canada through a special visa program created by Immigration Canada. An additional 500,000 have applied to the program and are expected to arrive in the coming months.
Many are arriving to Toronto and are without family here in Canada to help them. Among those will be some who are vulnerable to human trafficking, particularly seniors, single women, and women with children. There is an immediate need for families to host for a period of between one and six months some of those who have arrived.

Cardinal Collins has requested that a weekend Mass attendance count be conducted annually in all parishes and missions of the Archdiocese. This year the attendance count will continue on the weekends of October 15th/16th and 22nd/23rd.
The purpose of this very important count is to have a more accurate assessment of the number of people attending Mass on a weekend.
When you come in for Mass, you may notice a few “counters” clicking on tally counters at the doors of the church. The counters will be doing their jobs in a way as discreetly and non-intrusively as possible.
The Parent Meeting for those parents whose children will receive their First Communion in the spring will be on October 27th at 7:30 PM. It will be held here at the Church.

This is a worldwide collection for the missionary church and it is our opportunity to assist at-need Catholic communities globally. Offerings are combined with offerings from other Catholics around the world and distributed to missions and dioceses. We are called to share from our abundance with those less fortunate who lack the basic essentials to know, love and praise God. Thank you for your support of this important work.
