St. Gabriel’s Parish is hoping to sponsor at least one Ukrainian family. This will be done under the guidance of the Office for Refugees Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT). These are early days in this initiative and much of the process for being matched with a Ukrainian family in need has yet to be announced. As our Refugee Committee receives information and time lines from ORAT, the parish will be updated.
Sponsorship of a family will require the support of the St. Gabriel’s community in many different ways. If you would like to learn more about the volunteer roles and to sign up, you can access that through the parish website under Ministries, Refugee Committee. If you speak Ukrainian, we would appreciate you identifying that skill through the website.
Since volunteers on the committee will work one on one with the sponsored family members, it is classified as a High Risk Volunteer position by the Archdiocese and screening by the Volunteer Screening Committee is required.
For our Parish, this will be the fourth refugee sponsorship we will have done in the last 10 years.
We thank you, the St. Gabriel Parish members, in advance for your support.
There is still time to bring your prepared frozen casseroles to the Church at all the Masses next weekend for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.
Please think about volunteering to help feed our less fortunate sisters and brothers. Three different recipes are available in the Parish Office or online at the Parish website. Casserole pans are also available from the Parish Office. If you require more information, please contact Irene Albrecht at 416-221-2791.
Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre.
Your food donations are so important as Covid 19 remains with us and numbers of needy people continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired
ShareLife Sunday is next weekend.
When you support ShareLife, you support agencies like Mary Centre. Here’s how your support makes a difference for the work of this agency:
“Thank you to all who donate to ShareLife. With each donation we receive, we are able to attain our goals of assisting people in their efforts in building a good life, and also providing a safe place for people with a developmental disability to stay so that their families/caregivers and themselves can get some needed respite.”
To date, $10,810 has been received at the ShareLife Office and $30,270 has been received at the Parish for a total of $41,080 toward our goal of $198,000.
The next ShareLife Sunday collection is Sunday, May 1st.
Thank you for supporting ShareLife!

A VIRTUAL EVENT RECOMMENDED BY THE OFFICE FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN UNITY AND RELIGIOUS RELATIONS WITH JUDAISM
Yom HaShoah is a Remembrance Day of Jews who suffered and died during the Holocaust.
To commemorate this annual event, a special contemporary ritual has been designed called, “The Global Hitkansut Ceremony.” This virtual event will incorporate many survivors’ testimonies with literary texts, music, poetry and prayer to move us toward moral responsibility in the face of inhumanity.
For participation, please register: https://moralmemory.hartman.org.il/home
“Every part of this earth is sacred to my people.” Chief Seattle
In preparation for Easter, we tried to give the church grounds the same loving attention that was showered on the church itself. Grasses and flower stalks were cut back, raked and bagged, tree and shrub prunings were sent to compost, and volunteers filled large garbage bags with refuse accumulated over the winter months. Then, on Good Friday, high winds blew more litter over the garden and, once again we filled multiple garbage bags with plastic bags, paper, cups, glasses, cardboard, etc.
It is disheartening to see the extent to which Earth is treated as a garbage dump rather than as our sacred home.

Monthly Reflection
The passion of our Lord is something that we often take for granted. In the busy hustle and bustle of our own everyday lives, especially living through a pandemic, we often forget the sacrifice Jesus made for us. However, every year we are especially reminded of Jesus’s love on Good Friday. This year, our parish youth group led the Stations of the Cross service for a fourth year. As one of the readers, I was really proud of our group’s efforts to lead our community in this special service.
Like many, the Stations of the Cross service allowed me to slow down and spend time in personal reflection. I was also able to draw connections between current world events and the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, inspiring me to think of little things I can do in my life to live in God’s love and light.
The music was an integral part for me during the service. Music always finds a way to express what the heart is feeling, and to hear the love of Jesus through the music was very moving. The Stations of the Cross was a beautiful way to reflect on our own lives and Jesus’s great sacrifice, helping prepare ourselves for the joyous season that is Easter.

ShareLife agencies serve everyone.
Today’s Gospel shares the parable of the woman accused of adultery, a message of Our Lord’s great love, forgiveness and respect for all people.
Likewise, ShareLife agencies are there to support the most vulnerable and marginalized members of our communities. ShareLife-funded social service agencies have an ‘open intake policy’ and provide help based on need—not on religion, lifestyle, gender or ethnicity.
With last week’s ShareLife collection, our parishioners have contributed $9,040 toward our goal of $198,000. Thank you for supporting ShareLife!
Thank you to the volunteers who prepared 42 casseroles for March. For April, your prepared casseroles (frozen please) will be collected at the Masses on the weekend of April 23rd/24th for delivery to the Good Shepherd Centre.

As you know, Russia has invaded Ukraine, resulting in widespread violence and a looming humanitarian crisis. In response to the request of parishioners, the Archdiocese of Toronto has launched a humanitarian relief effort to help the Ukrainian people at this time.
Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians have already fled their homes and are trying to find shelter in neighbouring countries. The United Nations estimates that there could eventually be up to five million Ukrainian refugees, depending on how the war transpires.
During Lent, a donation to help Ukrainians who are suffering due to this war would be a most appreciated gift.
The Archdiocese of Toronto will channel donations to support the Office for Refugees, Archdiocese of Toronto (ORAT) and the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA).
ORAT is Canada’s largest private Sponsorship Agreement Holder, which helps bring hundreds of newcomers to our country each year. It will use donations to bring Ukrainian refugees to Canada as soon as possible.
Your donation will help Ukrainians who are beset by violence in Eastern Europe and it will help some of them find a new home in Canada.
Those wishing to help may do so in the following ways:
Online through the Archdiocese of Toronto website: www.archtoronto.org By phone through the Development Office – 416-934-3411 Through the parish, making cheques payable to: St. Gabriel’s Parish – Ukraine Relief –
Please continue to pray for the Ukrainian people and all those who suffer under the human tragedy of war. Thank you for your continued assistance.

My name is Chloe and I have been a member of the youth group since 2016. I first joined as part of my preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation. However, as I spent more time with all the other members, I felt like I truly belonged and continued to be an active member after many years.
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to attend our parish Lenten Retreat and listen to Fr. Jim O’Shea preach about various issues of today. Fr. Jim mentioned how as children of God, we must make everyone feel welcome, no matter what background they come from. As a young Catholic who is a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Fr. Jim’s points made me feel heard.
There have been times where I did not feel welcome in the Catholic Church because of comments I received from other Catholics outside our parish community. However, after attending this retreat, I felt inspired to strengthen my faith once again. This was a great start to my Lenten season.
Our church and our youth group has helped me on both a spiritual and personal level. It is a place filled with great role models and memorable experiences where I feel safe and supported. Our parish motto, “We Belong, We Believe, We Become” resonates with me always. I am so grateful to be a part of a welcoming church community!
