SHARELIFE

Working wonders with families in our neighbourhoods…

The Smith family came for counseling to deal with the sudden death of their parent. The children’s grief was complicated by the fact that they were now residing with their other parent, with whom they had not spent a great deal of time, due to long work hours to provide for the family.

As this grief stricken family learned about each other, how to relate, how to trust, how to love and build a new definition of “family”, they began to open up to their counselor and share what their life was like before their parent’s tragic death. One child in the family shared that a trusted adult in their life used to be very abusive to them – physically assaulting them, locking them in closets, and making them hurt each other – to name just a few of the milder incidents. That disclosure to the family therapist led to the arrest of that individual and it also resulted in those children no longer feeling afraid of any future victimization. Closer family intimacy, safety, and a brighter future resulted for the Smith Family. Last year, ShareLife-supported Family Service agencies provided family counseling to over 5,100 people in the Greater Toronto Area.

BAKE SALE IN SUPPORT OF SCHOOL IN HAITI

Weekend of June 13th/14

Many of you may remember that the parishioners of St. Gabriel’s made a generous contribution, through a bake sale and personal donations, to building a school in Corail, Haiti (in the vicinity of Port-au-Prince) for children of displaced citizens after the 2010 earthquake. The school was built through the fundraising efforts and personal involvement of two of our parishioners, Eric and Helen Pierre.

St. Paul de Corail School opened with 2 classes in 2013 and 3 more classes in 2014. The school presently serves approximately 165 children and is also used for adult education after school hours. Due to the desperate need for schools and community facilities in the area, the present goal is to add a second floor to the school with five new classrooms.

Eric and Helen are seeking help again from their fellow parishioners. If you enjoy the sweet things in life, please join them at a Bake Sale on the weekend of June 13th/14th after all the Masses. There will be sweets of every kind, as well as an opportunity to speak with members of Pierspective Entraide Humanitaire, the organization they spearheaded, about Haiti and their school construction projects.

“What an ambassador for Mary Centre he was and Gord was really tickled to be chosen for this role as co-speaker.”said Dominic Conforti, retiring Director at Mary Centre. Gord, who is intellectually challenged, shared his story at the 2014 ShareLife Golf tournament about how he and his two brothers came to be part of Mary Centre. He spoke about Christina who helps them during the day involving them in activities in the community and teaching them to do things for themselves. Then there was James who is with them on the weekends and helped them grow a veggie garden every spring and summer and the pride they feel when they pick their vegetables. Last year, over 2,300 people with special needs received the compassion and care they needed to enjoy their life and be productive in their homes and communities

SHARELIFE

Working wonders for our new arrivals in Canada…

Within one year of arriving in Canada, large numbers of immigrants who had no prior mental health problems experience mental health challenges that often impede their ability to settle in Canada. In addition, there are few culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health services. Last year, ShareLife agencies helped to meet this challenge by providing advocacy programs for more than 40,000 immigrants and refugees in the GTA.
