SEASON OF CREATION 2022

The annual event of Season of Creation began on September 1st, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, and ends on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology.

Each year an ecumenical steering committee selects a theme, and this year inspiration is taken from Psalm 19:1-4 that proclaims, “Listen to the Voice of Creation.” A short video to introduce this season may be watched via this link, https://youtu.be/WyjUTvGmliI. The Celebration Guide for 2022 provides detailed information on how to observe this season in parishes, schools and at home. Please see https://seasonofcreation.org/.

May this Season of Creation renew our Christian unity through our common efforts to respond to the voices on the margins of society and to care for the earth as good stewards in our discipleship

Here at St. Gabriel’s, you are encouraged to visit our creation garden at any time. As you walk through the garden you can read about creation at various spots along the way!

The garden is open all month and is actually open every day of the year. You could stop in the church to say a prayer or stop by to say hello!

CHILDREN’S LITURGY – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

At the 10:30 AM Mass from mid – September to May each year, children ages 4 to 10 have the opportunity to gather as a group for the Liturgy of the Word led by adults who have volunteered. We are in need of more volunteers to assist this program. For more information or to volunteer, please call Dawn Burke at 416 671-0561 or leave a message at the Parish Office.

CHILDREN’S FAITH PROGRAM – 2022/2023

Registration forms for the Children’s Faith Program are now available in the parish office. This program is for children of the Parish who attend other Catholic schools, public or private schools. Classes are held at St. Gabriel’s School every second Sunday. Classes begin on September 18th.

Please note that a separate Sacramental registration form is required if your child will receive the sacraments of First Communion, Reconciliation or Confirmation during the 2022/2023 school year. These forms are also available in the Parish Office. Baptismal Certificates are required for First Communion and Confirmation.

R.C.I.A. AND ADULT FAITH DEVELOPMENT

Meetings in preparation for the R.C.I.A. (Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults) will begin this month. These meetings are for persons interested in learning more about the Catholic Faith. The exploration may lead the candidate to seek baptism, and become a member of the Catholic Christian community; or for Christians already baptized into another Christian denomination, the reception into the Catholic Church.

Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation but who wish to do so are also encouraged to attend these sessions.

If you are interested in joining the RCIA meetings or if you would like to have more information about it, please contact Sr. Maria Lucia at 416-221-8866.

CARING FOR THE HOMELESS IN OUR CITY

Thank you for your generous support of Rosalie Hall and the Good Shepherd Centre over the summer. They are very appreciative.

Rosalie Hall assists young parents and their children to realize their potential. The food we donate from our parish often replenishes their empty food bank.

Good Shepherd provides hot meals and shelter for the homeless in our city as well as a chance to start again through the Resettlement or DARE Programs. In addition to our casseroles and food donations, our Garden Ministry has been growing fresh food for the Good Shepherd Centre.

Your food donations are so important as numbers of people in need continue to increase. Please check the expiry dates before donating since we cannot pass on food that has expired.

SHARELIFE

For those who have not yet contributed to ShareLife, you may still do so. Envelopes are at the back of the church. Please be as generous as your means allow.

SEASON OF CREATION 2022 – INTERFAITH PRAYER SERVICE

Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 6:00 to 7:30 PM
Room 4A, Catholic Pastoral Centre
1155 Yonge St., Toronto

The calamities around the world are due to environmental disasters and all faith communities are concerned and actively advocating to save our common home. Keeping in mind the importance of creation, the Christians around the world are actively preparing to celebrate the Season of Creation, from September 1, the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, to October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron Saint of Ecology. The proposed theme for this year is “Listening to the Voice of Creation” which is symbolised by the “Burning Bush”. It is chosen by an ecumenical steering committee and inspiration is taken from Psalm 19:1-4. The Office for Interreligious Dialogue at the Archdiocese of Toronto invites members of different faith communities to celebrate the Season of Creation with us in-person through prayer and action.

WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEE

September 25th

The theme announced by His Holiness Pope Francis for the 108th World Day of Migrants and Refugees is “Building the Future with Migrants and Refugees.” In his message, Pope Francis reminds us that inclusion of those most vulnerable is the necessary condition for full citizenship in God’s Kingdom. Indeed, the Lord says, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me a drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, sick and you took care of me, in prison and you visited me” (Mt 25:34-36).

RETREAT FOR CANCER PATIENTS AND THEIR CAREGIVERS

Wednesday, September 28th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre, Mississauga

A relic of St. Peregrine will be in our Chapel during the retreat. Come, let Jesus hold you lovingly in His gentle arms and fill you with strength.

The cost is $45, hot lunch included. Please contact Jean at office@qoa.ca or by phone at 905-.278-5229.

THE GARDEN SHED

Labour Day may herald a return to the activities of parish life, but for us in the Garden Ministry, it is the time when life in the garden slows down and our work draws to a close.

Harvests of carrots, radish, cucumber, tomatoes, beans and herbs will continue to the end of the month when we start putting the garden to bed.

In the meantime, let the two new chairs in the south garden entice you to a few moments of tranquility in that beautiful oasis. Designed by Rachel Mcquillan, they were painted by Youth Group members Therese Celis and Czarina Reyes along with Rachel and her daughter Quinn.

FINANCE CORNER

One of the most financially sound ways to support the Archdiocese of Toronto is with the gift of securities (stocks, bonds, mutual funds). When you donate securities to a registered charity, you pay no capital gains tax and receive a tax receipt for the full amount of the gift. It means a great tax break for you and an increased support of various archdiocesan charities. For further information, contact the Development Office at 416-934-3400 Ext. 519/561 or send an email to development@archtoronto.org
