PASSIONIST JUBILEE SYNOD IN TORONTO

Phase One
www.stgabrielsynod.blogspot.com

Last December, Fr. Jim O’Shea, the Passionist Provincial, visited St. Gabriel’s to speak about the Passionist Jubilee Synod in Toronto. The goal of this synod is to listen to the voices of the marginalized in our parish community and to propose a vision for the work of the Passionists in Canada. This synod is a time our community to gather to explore serious issues, to listen to and learn from one another, to imagine how to address the issue in order to move into a better future, and to report these findings – all with the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

The synod process has now begun with Phase One, which is focused on the theme of gratitude. This phase will be facilitated virtually through an online blog, where participants are welcome to share their gratitude for St. Gabriel’s Parish and the Passionists’ missions in Canada. The blog is now open to all parishioners.

Please visit the parish website for more information, or you can visit www.stgabrielsynod.blogspot.com to access the blog directly. On the blog website, please see “Using the Blog” for instructions on posting on the blog and commenting on posts.

ENGLISH ROSARY GROUP

The English Rosary Group will be meeting on the first Saturday of each month beginning in March. For the present time, the meetings will be online at 2:00 PM until in-person meetings are allowed.

A MESSAGE FROM THE CATHOLIC MARRIAGE TRIBUNAL

Recently, Pope Francis encouraged dioceses to remove the moral and physical distance which prevents the faithful from accessing the tribunal. To become more accessible the Toronto Regional Tribunal has opened a northern instructional office in Richmond Hill to serve the faithful of the archdiocese who have difficulty going downtown,

ARE YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW DIVORCED?

Every Catholic has a right to investigate their marriage (Canon Law 1674). It is free of charge.
Pope Francis has greatly simplified the procedures.

Talk to your pastor about the Catholic Marriage Tribunal and the marriage nullity process, or visit www.archtoronto.org/MarriageTribunal for more information.

MAINTENANCE AND LONG-TERM REPAIRS

Special Collection, Weekend of March 5th/ 6th

The Church building is approaching her 16th year of operation. Most equipment and machinery that keep the building functional are often not visible. This equipment has undergone regular checks and maintenance to ensure that they function properly and efficiently. Some of these have reached a critical milestone that would require major repairs or even a replacement. These items are classified as the “must haves” in our long-term budget.

One of the two project that we plan to undertake in 2022 is a major repair on the living wall. The living wall has not been in the best shape. We are in the process of identifying the issue and are close to a resolution. It involves the engineering components that reside behind the wall. Once this is resolved we can then reconstruct the external visible living wall to one that we are usually proud to associate with St. Gabriel’s Parish.

The second under consideration is asphalt resurfacing of the south parking lot. The condition is deteriorating and may pose problems in the near future if it is not repaired.

We cannot achieve these milestones without your continued support and contribution to the maintenance funds. A special collection is planned for March 5th/6th, 2022 weekend. Please be as generous as your means allow.

Passionist Jubilee Synod in Toronto (St. Gabriel Synod)

February 11th, 2022

WHY A SYNOD?

The Passionists’ mission has been to accompany and support the ‘crucified’ of each era of their 300-year history. More recently, those ‘crucified’ have included not just the marginalized of society but also the planet itself. During their jubilee year, Passionists around the world will discern how they can renew their mission to best serve the crucified of today. As the Passionists began to focus on that mission renewal for the region stretching from the Caribbean through the eastern United States and into Canada, a committee was formed at St. Gabriel’s Passionist Parish to help in that discernment process. The committee, with the support of the Provincial and Fr. Brando, decided to hold a synod that would listen to the voices of the marginalized and propose a vision for the work of the Passionists in Canada, keeping in mind how the next generation of leadership would help to deliver that mission, given the declining number of Passionists.

WHAT IS A SYNOD?

As the Provincial’s letter says, a synod is a time for people to gather to explore a serious issue, to listen to and learn from one another, to imagine how to address the issue in order to move into a better future, and to report these findings – all with the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The report is more likely to provide valuable and lasting insights when many people with different perspectives listen and discern during the synod.

WHO WILL PARTICIPATE?

The Passionist Jubilee Synod in Toronto will gather people from St. Gabriel’s Passionist Parish and from the Passionists’ mission in Canada, (as well as those who experience marginalization within our Church or society). Everyone is welcome to participate in the synod, including those who have experienced any form of marginalization.

WHAT WILL WE DO?

The synod will unfold in three phases which will follow the theme for the Passionists’ Jubilee celebration: gratitude, prophecy, and hope.

Phase One: Gratitude (Launched February 2022)

Phase one will look to the past with a focus on gratitude. Through a blog that will be linked to the St. Gabe’s website, you will be able to describe your gratitude for the good work that has been done via the Passionists’ mission in Canada, for how the needs of Earth have been included in the parish plans, for the ways you were supported when you felt marginalized, or for other gifts that have sparked a sense of gratitude. Phase one will last about 4 to 6 weeks

Questions? Send your questions to: stgabrielsynod@gmail.com.

Phase Two: Prophecy

Phase two will focus on the present as we listen to the prophecy spoken by the voices from the margins calling for change, now. Circles of listening will form to explore particular types of marginalization as they may relate to Indigenous issues, feminism, immigration and migrants, LGBTQ2S+, poverty, climate change or ecological issues, racism, forms of inequality, or other forms of marginalization. While the potential list of circles is long, the experiences and interests of the synod participants will determine the topics at the centre of the discussions as people with shared concerns gather into circles. Synod participants may choose to join more than one circle. Phase two is expected to last for several months.

March 26th – Horizons of Prophecy
10 am-12 pm, 2 pm-4 pm

Phase Three: Hope

The focus in Phase three is for the future not yet realized. Hope will start to grow through the respectful listening and dialoguing within the circles. It will further develop as the participants within each of the circles share their dreams for healing the suffering of today’s crucified by reducing forms of marginalization. Then, when the participants from the circles gather together in one group to share their insights and dreams, a map for putting these dreams into action can be drawn. This vision of hope, recorded in a report, will be given to the Provincial as a proposal for mission renewal of the Passionists’ work in Canada.

April 9th – Visions of Hope and Report

MINISTRY FOR MATURING ADULTS INVITATION TO A WRITING CIRCLE

In the Fall of 2019, a number of parishioners participated in the “Life Story Writing Programme” as part of our Ministry with Maturing Adults. This was facilitated by Sister Mary Rose Marrin CSJ. Covid 19 prohibited follow-up gatherings in a Writing Circle. A Writing Circle is for participants from the original programme who would like to continue the process of life story writing, reflection and sharing.

We will begin a Writing Circle on Zoom this January 2022 and hopefully we will move to in-person sessions when restrictions are lifted. The group will gather every last Friday for 90 minutes each session.

The sessions will be held on: January 28th, February 25th, March 25th, April 29th, May 27th, and June 24th, 2022. Sister Maria Lucia will host this on Zoom and Sister Mary Rose will facilitate the sessions. A minimum of at least six persons is required to form a circle. If you are interested in participating in this Writing Circle, please contact Sr. Malou at StGabrielMMA@gmail.com.

Stay tuned….

We are excited to announce several other programs that parish Ministry with Maturing Adults Committee will be starting in the next two months. All sessions will be offered virtually. Please watch this space for further information.

FINANCE CORNER

The 2022 Offertory envelopes are now available. When you attend Mass, please remember to pick up your box of envelopes from Nikki, maintaining the required physical distancing.

If there is no box with your name on it and you want a box, please let the parish office know in person, by phone or by email. If you are donating via Pre-Authorized Giving or Donate Now at the Archdiocese, you normally would not have an envelope box assigned to you.

If you still have envelopes in your possession from any prior year, including 2021, do no use them for 2022.

Please write your name and complete address on the first few 2022 envelopes you use so that the office can ensure we have your correct information for sending out tax receipts.

PRE-AUTHORIZED GIVING

The Archdiocese of Toronto has established a Pre-Authorized Giving Plan (PAG) to assist you in your support of the work of the parish through your regular parish offerings.

To accomplish the mission entrusted to us by Christ, the parishes depend entirely on the generosity of their parishioners. Pre-authorized giving allows you to give to your parish through scheduled monthly transfers from your bank account or credit card. These funds are then deposited directly to the parish account.

There are various benefits of participating in pre-authorized giving, both for you and for your parish.

Advantages for you:
 The convenience of having your offering automatically contributed to the parish.
 Knowing you continue to support the parish even when you are away.
 Continual support of ministries and programs funded through the parish.

Advantages for the Parish:
 Regular, dependable contributions to the parish.
 Reduction of cash on hand.
 Reduction of paperwork.

For information on how to enroll, please contact your parish office or email development@archtoronto.org.
